Rita’s Rating: 4 out of 5
In the year 2059 two intruders break into the home of the Swisher family, killing the parents, the son, their daughter’s friend, and their nanny. The daughter Nixie survived because she went downstairs to get a drink and hid when she saw a man kill her nanny and saw the men go upstairs to kill her family and friend. When New York Police and Security Department Lieutenant Eve Dallas and her partner Detective Delia Peabody arrives at the scene, Eve deduces that one person remains unaccounted for amidst the tragedy. She searches the home until she finds Nixie hiding in the bathroom. She feels that the frightened traumatized little girl remains in danger so she brings the lass home with her to keep her safe until she can bring the animals that did the heinous crimes to justice. When a social service worker is snatched in daylight, Eve knows the killers are on the move so she sets a trap that backfires with two officers dead. Now the entire department wants these killers caught preferably dead. Eve seems more vulnerable as she feels her latest assignment is the worst ever because it involves children and she struggles to relate to a child who has lost everything.
Writing as JD Robb, Nora Roberts writes a wonderful suspense novel. The future she sets is realistic without being the industry standard. Everything is plausible. You really believe that this could be where our future is heading. This is part of series that ingloriously refreshing. Eve is strong without being too hard and yet somehow still very feminine. She doesn’t open herself up easily because of her past. However with her husband Roarke, she does. Roberts has provided women with a way to have that hero we need and still maintain our sense of being women. While the struggles of eve are very much what most women have she also has a set of struggles that any woman today would never want or could even imagine having. Yet through Roarke Eve has want every little girl dreams of having as a woman, her Prince Charming. Nixie is as strong as eve and eve sees herself in the child. She is sworn to protect her, but somehow the small child scares her to death.
This is classic JD Robb. You are drawn to Eve and Nixie. You are drawn to what they suffer not only together, but separately as well. Ms. Roberts delivers an action pack novel filled with suspense and drama without being sappy or full of romance. There is just enough romance to want more but enough suspense to make you stay up all night to finish because you need to know how it ends. The why is always important and surprising. As part of a series there is enough revelations about the charters to make need to read the other books to put all the pieces together.
