If you have been following me on Facebook you know that I have a slab leak at my house. This has been simply a rough month because of this crazy leak. So what is a girl to do? Well she pulls out the phone book and finds a plumber to come and check it all out. Does she call someone like Roto-Rooter Plumbing & Drain Service to come out and help her? She figures they are too expensive and calls a small time plumber.
What she discovered is that this was a hot water slab leak and required much more than a simple patch. I mean they were talking about tearing up my entire floor just to find the thing, repair it or replace the pipe and then relay a floor. Do you have any idea what tearing up a concrete floor and slab requires? Much more than I wanted. I had visions of waking up one morning to discover I was standing on the dirt and everything in the house was simply destroyed.
All of that was in addition to the $30,000 dollars this crazy plumber was talking about it would cost me to get everything repaired. That is a down payment on a new house! Can you just imagine? I love my house but it is old and spending that much money was more than I really was prepared to do. So I asked if we could do something different and was told no. A call later the real plumbers (lesson learned) and I discovered that there are tests that can be done to find the leak without tearing up the entire house. These tests are not that cheap but worth spending the money to get the leak repaired.
A few more minutes of discussion and I learned that a very simpler solution would be to re-plumb the house. It could be done for a reasonable amount of money, done in a couple of days, and things would be back to normal. So I agreed and that is what I am waiting on to get done. Apparently the real plumber is very busy but promises to get to us before the first of February which is great because we won’t be home so there is no hassle for us. Right now there is because we have no hot water. I have to go outside and turn it on at the hot water heater when we want to take a shower because if we leave it on then water is just to keep pouring out and run up both our water and electric bills.
