Holidays movies are here again! I know they started showing these in like June, but I wait until now to watch them. We have a list of movies that we watch every year. I enjoy these movies and am passing that love onto the next generation.
- It’s a Wonderful Life
The classic movie that I will get upset if I can’t watch. This movie gets to me every year. I love how it shows that regardless of who you are or what you think of yourself you matter in the lives of those around you. That without you in their lives things could be worse than they are. The choices you make affect everyone around you.
- A Christmas Story
Who doesn’t have this on their list? I mean everyone knows “You’ll shoot your eye out!” Ma loves this movie and we always add it to our list. The lamp in the window is one of my favorite scenes.
- National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
Okay, this was a family favorite when I was a kid and I still must watch it. Clark reminds me of my father in the way he decorated the house. Also, when he is kicking over the reindeer because he’s frustrated. My dad decorated our house every year. In the movie when Clark pulls out the wad of lights and “Little tangle here.” My father would do that and say, “Your mother put these up.” After the third or fourth set like that, he would go out and buy all new. We had though plastic candles that light up. They would blow over in the wind. One year he put a stop to that by drilling a whole in the bottom, filling the candle with sand, and then bolted a board to the bottom to create a base. They ever fell over again.
- Miracle on 34th Street
I like the original version of this but will watch the newer one. It is a movie that I watched as a child and still love. There is such hope in it that you can’t help but enjoy it.
- The Polar Express
Okay this a new classic for us. There is something about it that I love, and we took the Polar Express one year. It was magically, and the kids loved it. Most of the movies the kids like I suffer through during the season, but this is one that I will happily watch and enjoy.
This is just a small list of some of our favorites. There are many more that we watch. We watch one or two each night leading up to Christmas beginning on Black Friday. This is our version of a countdown to Christmas. The family loves it since they each get to put their favorites in the pile to be watched. What we do is add each movie title onto a slip of paper and then I put it in a jar. Each night a different child draws a movie. We watch the movie on the slip and then if there is time we draw another. On Christmas day there is one (sometimes two) slips left and we watch those that day.
What are your favorite holiday movies? Which ones do you have to watch every year? Which ones do hate?
