Eating healthy during the holiday season can be hard in the best of times. I have a horrible snacking habit that I just cannot seem to break. Don’t ask me why because I don’t have the answer. So when I knew I was going to be out-of-town and subjected to all the snacks at my brother’s house (God love him!) I went in search of snacks that wouldn’t break my diet. What I found was Laura’s Wholesome Junk Food. I was nervous when I asked to work with them and even more so when the cookies arrived. Laura’s Wholesome Junk Food is just what you think it is; junk food for the health nuts or at least those of us who are trying to eat better and live longer for our children.
From Laura’s Wholesome Junk Food website:
Dr. Laura Trice, the CEO of Laura’s WJF based in Venice, California, started baking healthy cookies at a very young age at her Grandmother’s farm in Massachusetts. It was in 1993 that Dr. Laura created the original Laura’s Wholesome Junk Food cookie with oats as the whole grain and dates as the primary sweetener. They were so delicious she started baking them on a regular basis.
In 1996, while working on the set of 7th Heaven, Dr. Laura would bring cookies to the set from time to time. Acting as Set Medic, she noticed that when people ate donuts for breakfast, lots of people came to her with headaches several hours later. This did not seem to happen when they ate other foods, including her treats. One day, she noticed that some of the truck drivers on the set were actually eating her cookies for breakfast instead of donuts! This is when she realized that the regular person thought her cookies tasted great! And, that by making something that tasted great and was also good for people, people would make better choices, be able to prevent certain health issues in the future, AND feel better along the way.
TESTING Laura’s Whole Junk Food:
I received 6 different kind of cookies to try out; Oatmeal Chocolate Chip, Oatmeal Raisin, Extreme Fudge, Cashew Chocolate Chip, Mint Double Fudge and Cranberry Breakfast. of the six Cranberry Breakfast was my all time favorite. I started eating more cranberries a few years ago after a kidney stone but I must tell you this was the best way to have them in my diet. In fact, I heat the cookies in the oven for a minute or so and they were wonderful for breakfast. I also broke them up and added them to ice cream and yogurt as a topping. The cookies are not hard in any way. My least favorite was the Oatmeal Raisin but it has nothing to do with the cookies and more to do with me. I HATE Oatmeal Raisin cookies with a passion. My kids however, love them and these were no exception.
