3 Great Ways to Fund Your Indie Game

Creating and releasing an indie game takes a lot of time and effort. As a developer, you’ll need to sort out quite a few things. One of the more notable is how you’ll fund your indie game. If you can’t afford this out-of-pocket, you’ll need to look elsewhere.

It’s natural to feel a little stressed by this, and you mightn’t know where to start. Thankfully, there are more than a few options you can go with. Three of these could be great picks for your indie game development.

Fund Your Indie Game: 3 Ways to Try

1. Project Funding

When most developers think of working with a publisher, they believe this has to be a long-term relationship. You mightn’t want to go that route, so you might think you’d have to avoid publishers. That isn’t always the case. Many of them might be interested in project funding, which just focuses on funding one game.

This can be appealing for more than a few reasons. Depending on the agreement, you might get more than just funding. You could get access to marketing help and other expertise. These could make this path more than worth it, especially when it comes to actually releasing your indie game.

2. Crowdfunding

Crowdfunding has always been an effective way to fund projects, and plenty of successful video games got their start this way. You’ll have several notable platforms to choose from with this, with each of them offering pros and cons. It’s just a matter of figuring out which one’s best for you.

Then there’s mastering your pitch. This could take a decent bit of work, like creating a crowdfunding pitch video. By spending a bit of time on this, you’ll be much more likely to get the money you need to fund your indie game. It’ll be more than worth the time it takes.

3. VC Funding

Venture capital (VC) funding is one of the newer ways to fund a video game, but it’s getting more and more attention. VC funds see just how profitable many games can be, and you can use this to your indie game’s advantage. You could end up getting more funding than you would’ve thought.

More than a few VC funds have been established solely to focus on the video game industry. While this involves giving away a certain percentage of your indie game’s profits, it can still be more than worth it. It’s at least worth considering this path.

Fund Your Indie Game: Wrapping Up

Trying to fund your indie game can often be a stressful experience. It’s easy to see why, especially when you’re not able to fund it yourself. Thankfully, you’ll have plenty of options, with some of these standing out more than others. Each of them will offer their pros and cons.

It’s worth taking the time to weigh each of these. There’s no right or wrong path to take, as long as it’s the best decision for you and your indie game. You shouldn’t have a problem finding some funding.
