4 Father-Son Outdoor Activities for the Spring

Feb 02, 2018 | Rita

The cold months of winter can have you waiting anxiously for the return of pleasant weather in the spring, a time when you can finally return to the great outdoors and enjoy activities with the family without freezing your tail off. The temperate climate makes doing things in nature fun again, so it’s only a matter of time before sons start approaching their dads and asking: “can we go do something today?” There are plenty of things to do outside during the spring, but the following four activities are some of the most fun for father-son duos:

1. Hunting

Every father should teach their son how to hunt eventually, not only for the sake of building survival and defense skills, but also to introduce the concepts of discipline and planning. Shops like Woodbury Outfitters report a higher sales volume during the spring, as many hunters gear up for family hunting trips. Taking your son hunting is a great way to instill important values while also spending quality time together in pursuit of the prey.

2. Planting a Garden

Teaching your son how to plant a garden is an excellent way to emphasize the importance of eating a healthy diet, while also equipping them with a skill that will let them provide better nourishment to themselves and their families in the future. It’s also great exercise and a good educational opportunity for you to discuss the different kinds of fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers you’re planting. Erecting a greenhouse is a good idea as well because it will help you teach them a bit about basic construction and building principles in the process.

3. Hiking

Hiking as a great activity for strengthening endurance and teaching important nature safety rules. It’s also a good way to teach navigation and other important skills that will come in handy for camping and/or surviving in the wilderness. Not to mention the awesome photo opportunities that you’ll be able to enjoy with your son as you traverse peaks and access secluded views that few other people get to enjoy.

4. Fishing

Fishing is the proverbial father-son activity, but many people have abandoned it because they’re not very good at it, or their kids aren’t interested in it. The key to having a fun fishing trip is to make sure everyone gets a catch before you go home. Sometimes that’s easier said than done but with a bit of preparation and the right fishing spot, you can be sure there will be plenty of action. Perhaps more important than the act of catching fish will be the amount of bonding that happens during the times when there isn’t much else going on.

Making a Weekend of It

There’s no reason why you can’t do all of the above within the course of a single weekend if you wanted to. Of course, you’re probably going to be doing some hiking on the way to your hunting spot, and there will probably be some lakes or rivers nearby for fishing as well. When you get back home, you can relax for the night and get started on the garden the next day.

Good ideas for father and son activities and even father-daughter as well! I wouldn’t take anything for the time and patience my dad put in to teach me how to fish. He baited my hook till I learned how and never complained when my line was tangled in some brush! Great way to bond and catching just one fish will make any kid want to go back for more!!

These are great ideas for me and my son…or daughter! I’ve actually never been hunting or fishing believe it or not but I’d be interested

Great ideas, but I don’t think what a child and his/her Dad do together is what matters, it is the time that they spend together

I just had a conversation today that more kids need to get outside. I grew up on a farm, so I appreciated digging my nails into the dirt to grow a garden, fishing, camping, mowing the lawn etc. It’s so important for kids to get outdoors.
