4 Top Tips for First Time Flyers

Nov 16, 2018 | Rita

Flying for the first time can be a nightmare. It can be easy to fall into the trap of letting your fear take control when you know that you’re about to soar through the skies for a few hours. However, rather than being scared, you should feel excited! You’re about to go on an adventure, and no matter if your first flight is a short jump to visit relatives or a global trek to explore a new destination, remember how much fun you’re going to have when you arrive. If you’re about to take your first flight, then luckily, there are ways to make the experience more enjoyable. Let go of the fear and embrace the adventure with these four top tips for first-time flyers.

  1. Look after yourself

Planes can be very uncomfortable, especially if you have a long flight ahead of you. Prepare well, and remember to keep some essentials in your carry-on bag. Pack some Vitamin C to help with any nausea, and you’ll also be protecting yourself from catching any illnesses as well. You should also have some wet wipes and sanitizing hand gel with you, as they can help you to feel refreshed and clean during the flight. They’re great for when you’ve just woken up from an in-flight nap as well!

  • The stress of delays

Flight delays are all too frequent, and if your nerves are already fraught, then a long delay can quickly become the last straw. The critical thing to remember if you do face a delay is that it is out of your control. Getting angry is usually just a symptom of your fear,so take some deep breaths and be proactive with your waiting time. Browse the airport shops, and remember to check with FairPlane to see if your flight delay entitles you to any compensation. Keeping busy will help keep you distracted.

  • Drink plenty

It may be tempting to calm your nerves with a few gin and tonics, but you should avoid alcohol at all costs. Alcohol will dehydrate you, and when you add in the dry air that you get on a plane, you’re going to end up with uncomfortable headaches. Stick to water, even if you are offered free alcoholic beverages. The good thing about drinking plenty of water is that it gives you the perfect excuse to stretch your legs during trips to the restroom, and it can also reduce the effects of jet lag as well.

  • Bring what you need

There are some essential items to bring if you want to distract yourself and enjoy your flight. Most will depend on how you like to spend your time at home, but it’s always worth making sure that you have:

  • Sound canceling headphones
  • Music downloaded onto your devices
  • Snacks
  • A good quality travel pillow
  • A hoodie to keep you warm

The more that you prepare for the inevitable discomfort of a flight, the more likely that your first flight will be an enjoyable experience.

The most important thing that you can take to the airport with you on your first flight is a positive mental attitude. It might be the most challenging thing to find, but it is essential.Focus on relaxing as much as possible, and you’ll find that the experience will be much more enjoyable. You may even fall in love with the realization that you can jump on a plane at any time and be anywhere you want in the world in just a few hours. Face your fears, and the world is suddenly your playground!

I love to fly. Fortunately, I haven’t encountered delays and I always read an ebook while waiting for the flight to board.
