We all want to be good at something and we all generally are. But how do you know that you are good at a skill such as consulting, asks experienced consultant Marc Sporn? There are in fact a few distinct traits that consultants possess. As Sporn attests, few consultants actually realize they are qualified in this career until another consultant points it out and ends up often being their recruiter. So what does Sporn look for in consultants that he hires to his firm?
You Naturally Have Answers to Questions
One thing that consultants do the most and the best is that they have this prowess and knack to answer questions diligently about their field. They do so with confidence, Sporn says, and that’s something that enables them to help lead and teach others that they can excel in their chosen career. Often that’s advice that is taken by executives.
You Generally Like to Help People Find a Solution
Aside from being smart and of quick wit, consultants also generally are fond of helping to procure a solution, explains Sporn. They do this because they are naturally driven human beings, he says. No is not an answer and failure is not a play call in their book.
You See the Big Picture
If you see the big picture, like years from now, on how one company play can get you ahead, you have the brash dynamic of a consultant, Sporn explains. Being able to see past the here and the now and into the uncertain future if what CEOs need to make those big calls.
You Know Measured Risks Can Payoff Big
Measured risk is just part of business. But faltering on making that decision makes the difference between success stories and failures. Good consultants, Sporn infers, are decision makers. They decide and then do not look back, only towards the future big picture and payoff.
