I posted this last year but the truth is I still love these shows and it really sheds light on who I am more. If you have been with me for a while then you already know how much I enjoy British television. There are many reasons why but one of the biggest is that the blood and guts aren’t always thrown in your face. Many of the shows get your thinking and to be honest they are the best when it comes to a good mystery. I wanted to share with y’all the 5 shows that I just adore and will watch again and again given the chance.
Marple
How could this not be one of my favorites? It was my grandmother who got me started on Miss Marple and I have been watching, as well as reading, her ever since. One thing I never understood though is why it is Miss and not Ms when it comes to her name. I mean she isn’t married and Miss is usually reserved for little girls or young women. After a certain age (and she certainly is) it changes to Ms. Not that it really matters but I wondered.
Now, I watch the newer versions which are just called Marple. These are my go to favorites when I want to escape and can’t find anything else to watch. Miss Marple just has a quietness to her that makes you want to go visit her in St. Mary Mead. Even when I know everything that is going to happen I still enjoy watching them.
Midsomer Murders
With 22 seasons there is plenty to watch again and again. The good thing about a show with this many seasons is that you forget things so when you watch it again it’s like it’s new. We start off with DCI Tom Barnaby and then around the end of season 13. From there his cousin DCI John Barnaby takes over. We get all sorts of mysteries along the way.
There are so many characters to love and the various Sergeants the DCI Barnabys have had over the years have all been wonderful. Not to mention the medical examiners. I love this one because they don’t really show all the gruesomeness that is the crime scene. It is implied many times but I don’t have to see it all.
Madame Blanc Mysteries
This is a new one that I watched earlier this year. It was so good. The entire season was about a single mystery and we watched as it unfolded. Georgina’s husband died in a car accident while on the phone with her. The only problem is the very expensive ring he was showing her was missing.
She isn’t letting the fact that the ring is missing go either. See Georgina just isn’t some housewife. She’s an antiques expert and moves herself to their home in France. Their house has to be sold and it gives her somewhere to stay while she becomes a PI aiding the local police and bonding with the town’s popular taxi driver.
The mystery was great and I loved all of the characters. I am so glad to hear they are coming back for a second season.
Vera
Vera has 11 seasons and I love them all. Vera is brash and loud and came up through the ranks during a time when it was difficult for women. It shows through in how she interacts with people at times.
Let me tell you though that the thing I love about Vera is how one of the detectives or cops put on her shoe covers at the crime scenes. I just love that. She doesn’t carry her own gloves or shoe covers. They give them to her and then bend down to put them on. Now I don’t know if they do it out of respect or if she actually makes them but I love it.
Vera is relentless when they are investigating and I honestly wouldn’t want her for my boss. However, if I was murdered I need her to investigate for me. I mean she will not give up. Even if it means putting her career on the line to solve a case.
Father Brown
Father Brown is a very cozy mystery show. He’s a priest who always seems to be better at solving the crime than the local police force. He has a love-hate relationship with them. He never gives up his convictions or beliefs, always seems to need to guide those who are wrongly being questioned, and has a parish secretary who is famous for her strawberry scones.
I watch them all on a variety of apps on the Roku. Acorn TV, BritBox (both of which I have monthly subscriptions via Prime Video). I watch some on Prime Video and Netflix as well. I am currently working my way through Midsomer Murders as there are 21 seasons.
I live in a small Georgia town that you most likely have never heard of and I LOVE it! My house is more than full as I am a single mother of four & caregiver to my aging mother and uncle. Lover of all things Outlander. Goes to the beat of her own drum woman.
