For many couples, surrogacy can be a highly effective path to parenthood. Despite the growing acceptance of this family-building option, many myths remain about the process. These misconceptions surrounding surrogacy for gay couples can lead to frustration and a lack of understanding, especially for those just beginning to explore the process.
The truth is surrogacy is an accessible and safe option for LGBTQ+ couples to form their families. In this article, we’ll explore all the facts and uncover the truth, debunking five common myths about surrogacy for gays. Read on to learn more about the reality of surrogacy for same-sex couples.
Myth #1: Adoption is the Only Option for Same-Sex Couples
Adoption is often seen as the only option for same-sex couples who want to start a family. But this isn’t true. Same-sex couples have a number of different options.
Surrogacy is when a surrogate mother carries and delivers a baby for a same-sex couple. Over the course of 14 years, the amount of gestational carrier cycles surged from 727 to 3,432, which equates to a jump from 1.0% to 2.5%.
Egg and sperm donation are also options for same-sex couples. This is a process where a donor provides eggs or sperm for the couple to use in fertility treatment.
Finally, co-parenting is an option for same-sex couples who want to have a child together but don’t want to be in a romantic relationship.
The best option for any couple is the one that works best for them.
Myth #2: Surrogacy is Illegal for Gay Couples
Surrogacy is often considered a taboo topic. One of the most common myths is that surrogacy is illegal for gay couples. But this is simply not true. This myth has been perpetuated by outdated laws and a lack of information.
While surrogacy laws vary from state to state, many states in the US allow same-sex couples to pursue surrogacy. In addition, some countries, such as Canada, have laws that make surrogacy accessible for same-sex couples.
Myth #3: It’s Impossible to Find a Surrogate Willing to Carry for Same-Sex Couples
When it comes to surrogacy, one of the most pervasive myths is that same-sex couples can’t find a surrogate willing to help them.
This myth is absolutely not true.
In reality, many surrogacy agencies and organizations specialize in helping same-sex couples find a surrogate. These agencies have extensive networks of surrogates and can provide couples with a list of potential surrogates willing and able to carry for them.
It’s also important to note that many surrogate mothers are open to working with same-sex couples. In fact, many surrogate mothers view surrogacy as an opportunity to help a couple create a family, regardless of their sexuality.
Myth #4: Both Same-Sex Parents Have a Genetic Connection to Baby
One of the most common myths about surrogacy is that both same-sex parents have a genetic connection to the baby.
This is false. While same-sex couples can use a surrogate to have a child, the baby will not have a genetic connection to both parents.
Surrogacy is a complex process. In some cases, one of the same-sex parents may provide the egg or sperm. In other cases, a donor egg or sperm may be used.
No matter what, the surrogate will always be the birth mother, and the baby will not have a genetic connection to both same-sex parents.
Myth #5: Gay Couples Shouldn’t Be Parents
Finally, there is a myth that gay couples shouldn’t be parents. This myth is rooted in outdated and homophobic beliefs and has no place in modern society. Same-sex couples can be excellent parents and provide their children with a loving, stable home.
Suppose you are considering surrogacy to expand your family. In that case, it is important to remember that you are not only capable of being excellent parents, but you are also setting a powerful example for the LGBTQ+ community. Your journey is proof that there is no one-size-fits-all definition of what a family should look like.
I live in a small Georgia town that you most likely have never heard of and I LOVE it! My house is more than full as I am a single mother of four & caregiver to my aging mother and uncle. Lover of all things Outlander. Goes to the beat of her own drum woman.

I watched a show on TV and the price for a surrogate, eggs and the whole procedure is in the 6 figures. It’s not cheap.

Thank you for debunking these myths for gay couples wishing to become parents, as an earlier commenter mentioned, most of the options available are outrageously expensive which is sad to me because I believe that any loving couple who want to have and raise a child in a safe, loving and supportive environment should be able to do so

Thank you for this! Every who wants a child to love should be able to have one – gay, straight, fluid, whatever. Surrogacy is a fine option. In the end, it all comes down to have love in the family, no matter the gender.

There are so many that want to provide a loving home – and they definitely should be able to. It is unfortunate how expensive it can be but so glad it is an option.
