If you haven’t exactly done your best to be your happiest and healthiest self in years past, there’s always time to turn things around in the months ahead. Even though certain aspects of self-improvement may not have been one of your New Year’s resolutions, there’s no time like now to start making positive changes that lead to a happy and healthy 2020.
The following are a few ways to help kick start your new journey to become the best version of yourself in this new year and beyond. All it takes is making that first change, and you’ll be well on your way.
1. Get in Shape
Exercising offers countless benefits for both the body and the mind, and the more active you become, the greater benefits you’ll realize. To start, find a workout and/or activity you enjoy and try to make a habit of doing that exercise a few times every week. You could try walking around the block, riding your bike several miles or swimming laps at the community pool.
Now, if going to the gym is more your thing, then make it a point to run on the treadmill and lift some free weights several days a week. You could also take a Zumba, spin or yoga class. In other words, do whatever floats your boat and get your body moving.
2. Start Eating Healthier
Start by drinking about a dozen cups of water every day and avoid sugary drinks like soda and juice. Drinking fresh water not only can flush out toxins and keep your brain sharp, but also helps you feel fuller so you can avoid overeating. Speaking of eating, adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet can significantly improve your health. So, skip the drive-thru and instead opt to cook at home (maybe even from scratch!). To kick start your day, eat a healthy and wholesome breakfast, which can help you avoid unhealthy foods loaded with salt and sugar.
3. Respark a Flame
Resparking an old flame can certainly bring both you and your partner more happiness in 2020. Psychology Today recommends making positive memories to boost overall happiness, and what better way to do that than by reconnecting and becoming closer to your partner.
Try being more sensual, tender and loving to your partner, and taking the time to laugh together and talk about any concerns either of you might have about the relationship to boost intimacy. That way, once things heat up in the bedroom, you’ll both feel more at ease and truly in touch with each other. Work on non-sexual intimacy before you try to respark the flame in the bedroom.
4. Work on Your Mental Health
Working on improving your mental health means avoiding comparing yourself to others, practicing daily gratitude, finding ways to make yourself (and others) laugh and practicing self-care. That could involve reading a book that motivates and inspires you, watching your favorite sitcoms or comedic movies with friends and family, keeping a journal, getting more sleep or taking that long-awaited vacation you have been dreaming of for years. In other words, do whatever you need to make yourself feel good.
5. Revamp Your Wardrobe
You’ve undoubtedly heard the mantra that if you look better, you’ll feel better. Indeed, giving yourself a confidence boost can make you happier, and spending time doing fun things like shopping for new clothes is certainly one way to go. Look for new clothes that make you feel great about yourself, fit well and accentuate your body type. You should start to feel better by simply looking in the mirror.
Getting Started
In addition to following the above five tips, you also need to ensure that you are regularly getting all your body vitals tested. This means that checking in with your doctors at periodic intervals. You need to ensure that all the internal organs are functioning properly. This includes doing a complete blood profile for measuring sugar levels, cholesterol, haemoglobin among other vitals. If you want to explore what are the tests you should be doing, know more.
Becoming a happier, healthier version of yourself can truly change your life, and with the above tips in mind, you can start on the right path in 2020. From eating healthier and finding the right exercise regimen to reading inspirational books and getting more sleep, there are tons of ways to get you closer to becoming the person you’ve always wanted to be. Take it one day at a time and try not to be too hard on yourself. If at first you don’t succeed, don’t be afraid to dust yourself off and try again.
