This year I have been searching for new ways to countdown the advent. After some searching on Pinterest I discovered a couple if great ways. I love this idea of books wrapped and placed in a late bucket. The kids pick a book each night, open it and that is the book that is read.
This idea of small numbers presents is great as well. Each night they choose the gift for that day and it is opened. My only concern is that it could get expensive if you have multiple children. These are magnet tins on a board which is great. I was thinking about doing this and filling it will small candies that the kids could share together.
Finally a little something for those who are Jewish. Here is a very child friendly Menorah. We aren’t Jewish but this is a great idea that I think could be adapted for the advent celebration as well.
How do you countdown with your children?
I live in a small Georgia town that you most likely have never heard of and I LOVE it! My house is more than full as I am a single mother of four & caregiver to my aging mother and uncle. Lover of all things Outlander. Goes to the beat of her own drum woman.

what we do or have done in the past is we wrap a book up and put the numbers on the wrapping paper and every night we open the book and read it.. its always a Christmas book but this year we haven’t done that and we are just making our own paper advent calendar.

I love that idea!

I just love that magnetic advent calendar you found on Pinterest! I have a knitted advent calendar (hats and mittens with the numbers on them) that we string over the curtain rod in the dining room. I have done both small presents and candies (usually a mix of both). My girls love it!

I bet they love it. Isn’t funny how the smallest thing can excite a child?

I love the book idea, I will pass this one on to friends of small children, what a fantastic idea, thank you for sharing

The book idea is great. My brother actually wraps up small gifts and they get one each day. However that is because he is a big kid himself and loves opening gifts

I love these! We do an Advent Calendar that is on a very small level. I love the Bucket Gift idea. I try to keep it small so that it doesn’t break the bank.

That’s me! I don’t want it to get so out of control.

When my son was young I had a small, maybe a foot high, artificial tree. In a basket I had some small, plastic ornaments. Every night he would get one to hang on the tree. Each had a small tag attached with an activity for the night. Watch a movie, play a game, make cookies, etc.
Rita says
That sounds like tons of fun! What a wonderful idea!!!

I love the ideas I did something similar with books last year. I think my son was too young to get it. I really should try this again this year since I have a ton of Christmas books.
Rita says
I would do it again this year. Maybe he will understand it better.

I love the Christmas tree idea. My grand daughter is 2 that lives with us and life has gotten away from us this year with them planning a move and me not in the best shape. The important things like advent have been gone unannounced. I hope next year my daughter can use this idea. She has a calendar for little B and opens up a treat every day, but I like the Christmas book idea and tree ornament one. Perhaps unwrapping a special ornament each day and putting on the tree.

We don’t have kids yet, but these are great ideas for Advent. I really like the numbered gifts idea. You can countdown and get kids excited about Christmas.
