Disclosure: I wrote this post as part of my participation in a blog tour for Latina Mom Bloggers on behalf of the Allstate Foundation and received compensation to thank me for taking the time to participate. However, all opinions expressed are my own.
Allstate Foundation “¡Vamos!” or “Let’s Go!” is the first ever national survey that looks at the attitudes and behaviors of not only Hispanics teen drivers but their parents as well. The survey found some things that I didn’t even know was true. For example 43% of Hispanic parents that drugs and alcohol is the number 1 killer of teens when it is actually automobile accidents. That is true for non-Hispanic teens.
Not to mention that many Hispanic teens wait til they are 18 to get a license. Their parents think that waiting until that age means they are more mature. However waiting means they miss out on the graduated license which can actually be a life saver for teens. Most states have a GDL now and teens go through various stages of a license as they learn to drive and get older. Another good thing is the Parent-Teen Agreement where you come up with a written agreement with rules of the road and what will happen if your teen breaks those rules. You both sign this agreement and I can tell you that this is something that I will be doing for sure.
Recently I attended a teleconference with Hispanic Allstate Agent Jorge Monsivais, who is the “¡Vamos!” national Hispanic community spokesperson as well as a parent of a teen driver. He gave us some great tips and advice about teen drivers. One of the tips I really liked was to model our own driving behavior so our children see it from a young age. That means they will grow up seeing us putting on our seat belts, not texting or talking on the cellphone (which is a big one for moms) and learn to not do those things themselves.
