Solo travel adventures can be some of the best you’ve ever had, especially in a bustling city like NYC where the world can feel like your oyster. Unfortunately, solo travel does also have its downsides in a bustling city location where chancers and criminals can spot a woman traveling alone from a mile off.
How can you stay safe, and make the most of your NYC trip at the same time? Keep on reading to find out.
# 1 – Be a savvy explorer
If you don’t plan your trip, there’s a risk you’ll end up paying twice the going rate for things like taxi fares. After all, nothing says gullible like a solo traveler with a guidebook on the side of the road.
Instead, successful solo travel in NYC is all about savvy explorations and, importantly, the planning that allows you to achieve them. Before your trip, research things like transport options, taxi lines and rates, and just general local behaviors. As well as allowing you to book in advance so you don’t have to risk roadside trysts, this will make it far easier to immediately look like you’re in your comfort zone, and that you’re a wise traveler who won’t be taken for a ride.
# 2 – Choose Convenient Locations
As striking as they can be, more isolated areas of NYC (yes, they do exist) like Jamaica Bay can see you needing to do a whole lot more cross-city exploration. That can mean either expensive taxi rides or potentially risky solo subway excursions. Avoid that by choosing bustling, convenient with everything you might need in your day-to-day, like Manhattan or Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
Equally, when you’re thinking about where to stay in Williamsburg Brooklyn or other happening areas, choose central accommodations like the iconic Arlo Williamsburg. This way, you’ll put yourself right in the heart of the action, and can easily pop out for food or a drink without leaving that comfort zone. That’s not to say you shouldn’t still explore, but it does mean you can limit your explorations to carefully planned trips, with set budgets and less risk of wasting time or money.
# 3 – Learn how to eat alone in NYC
NYC is so busy that no one will either notice or care if you order a table for one. However, there are ways to make solo dining in NYC even easier, such as choosing street dining options like the fantastic GG’s Fish and Chips around Brooklyn, so you can take your food with you.
Bar-based dining in NYC is another great option for avoiding that ‘table for one’ stigma. There are also a wealth of options for this, including the famed Dead Rabbit in the Financial District. Here, you can prop up the bar with loads of other people, and feel like you’re eating with friends rather than alone!
Solo travel needn’t be scary, even in a bustling location like The Big Apple. Simply stick to tips like these to make the most of your trip from start to finish.
I live in a small Georgia town that you most likely have never heard of and I LOVE it! My house is more than full as I am a single mother of four & caregiver to my aging mother and uncle. Lover of all things Outlander. Goes to the beat of her own drum woman.

I’ve never traveled to NYC alone. I think eating at a bar is a good idea so that you won’t have to request a table for one.

I eat alone a lot when I travel…making the server your ally (asking for menu recs, etc) really helps!

I saw a story on some show I was watching about how many people are taking vacations by themselves these days. I like the idea and have traveled alone a lot. These are some great tips to keep in mind.
