Apples, Apples, Apples

Nov 19, 2015 | Rita

Apples! Apples!

Okay on my list of things to do was to visit the Apple Orchard. My brother told me about this place before and I knew that I wanted to visit. I mean after all what is fall with visiting an apple orchard. So we headed to North Carolina to visit Sky Top Orchard.

North Carolina

The drive up was simply beautiful with the mountains and all of the beautiful fall colors.

Animals at Sky Top

There wasn’t really anyone there at the orchard so we decided that we would walk around a bit. They had animals that you could feed. The goat was super excited to see us and stayed right at the fence. The ducks waddled over and the sheep completely ignored us.

playground

There is even a play area for the kiddies! The area is bigger but I just love the apple and pumpkin playhouses the best.

phone booth

I LOVED the phone booth! Although I didn’t get inside of it. I should have asked if I could! Maybe next time!!

bathrooms

The bathroom situation was a bit funny! There were like 4 for the men and 20 for the women. I had to use one and all I can say is that it is a portable bathroom and you all know how that goes.

apples on the ground

We didn’t see a ton of apples because a lot had already been picked that morning and were in the bags inside to be purchased. However there were plenty on the ground which my brother told me not to fall over because I manged to twist my ankle like as soon as we got out. I don’t have an actual bone in one ankle instead I have a rod which makes some gravel tricky for me. As soon as he said watch the gravel here I went down. Luckily he caught me, while he was laughing, and I only had to deal with it swelling all day.

apples in the tree

If you look closely  there are some apples in the trees.

walking the orchard

I should tell you that this place is HUGE and we only walked a couple of rows before we headed back to the top. The reason is that my ankle hurt and truthfully I don’t think I would have been able to walk the entire thing. Even my brother who, as you can see had no trouble walking around (and no is NOT reliving himself since that is first thing his wife asked when she saw this picture), but after this row even said to head back.

Jeeping to Sky Top

They even have apple donuts that they make (we could smell them being cooked!) We went early in the morning and as I said no one was really there. My brother said that he has been on the weekend when the car line down waiting to get into the place was all the way down the mountain. All in all we had a great day and let me tell you riding in the Jeep all the way up there wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. The Jeep was very comfortable and allowed me to get a great view.

We go apple picking every year near our town. Our favorite apple is the Honey Crisp. I joke that they should weigh my kids before going into the orchard and then when they come out so I pay the difference. They love to eat the apples while we pick!

That looks like a fun outing, portable toilets or not. I’ve gone to apple orchards with my family, but to buy not pick. It’s kind of a family tradition to go every fall.

It looks like a pretty and fun place to visit. Those kids playhouses look really neat. I’m sorry you twisted your ankle. I hope it’s feeling better now. It’s interesting that they picked the apples already. I know a lot of people go to places like that because they want have the fun of picking them themselves.

It’s been SUCH a long time since I have been, but my daughter went with her bestie this year and some of the orchards have quite the awesome treats available to buy…baked apples with caramel sauce and whipped cream. I just love the cider! I miss going and the smell of apple EVERYthing. Honey Crisp are the best. Hubby planted some a few years back.

That’s a pretty neat phone booth. I’m sure my kids would make a tardis joke!

Sounds like you managed to have a good time, even though the apples were picked and you hurt your ankle. It is so pretty it would be nice for the drive and the apple donuts – yum!
