This is a story that I have been meaning to share with you all for a long time. Things just always seemed to keep coming up. Every time I put it on my schedule something would happen, and I would move it around. So, I am just now sharing it with you and hope that you can forgive me for the lateness of it. However, I think now is the perfect time to share it. We have gotten through the holidays and are now stuck in the cold of the winter months. Let me share with you the day my brother went up against a crab.
When we went to Botany Bay, SC we saw all sorts of wildlife. One thing that was amazing was the crabs that were running across the road. Now we didn’t know there were crabs. What happened was we saw something and stopped the car to see what it was. The place we stopped at wasn’t the best. I mean they had beware of the alligator signs everywhere but that wasn’t what we saw. In fact, the entire time I was down there we didn’t see an alligator once.
Anyway, what we saw were tiny crabs running across the road. I mean like hundreds of tiny crabs running around the road. My brother said he would get out and take a picture for me. This one crab apparently got super irritated because it went into defense mode. Check out the pictures of the crab getting ready to attack my brother! I wish I could share the video we made because my brother was screaming like a girl. It was the funniest thing. However, our language wasn’t kid-friendly as we were laughing. That trip we discovered that when the kids weren’t around (it was a few days with no kids at all) we talked like sailors!
We had the best time visiting Botany Bay. Typically, something like that wouldn’t be my cup of tea but with the right people we had a blast. Of course, we did have one small incident where I kept hitting my brother in his bad arm. One that he tore his bicep and pulled a whole bunch of stuff. The next day he said it was sore from all my hitting. He got over it though, after all, I hit like a girl. He doesn’t!
If you ever have the chance to visit Botany Bay, SC I would highly recommend that you go. They have a self guided tour that you drive through filled with information. You wouldn’t think there is much to see other than water and an alligator or two. Still we didn’t see one and I’m feeling some kind of way about that. With my luck I probably would have gotten eaten by one if we had seen it. Back to why you should visit! There is a rich history there beyond the wildlife that I had no idea even existed. A history that I am thrilled to have learned about and can’t wait to take the kids so they can experience that history as well.

We live in SC and went on vacation to Edisto Island, SC but we stayed in a beach house and didn’t see Botany Bay there. Funny story! We will have to check that area out next time we visit.

Botany Bay is as you are coming into Editso Island, like after you cross the long bridge. You really have to look for the sign since it is a dirt road. It is a beautiful place. We stayed at the Wyndham Resort while we were there but I would love to stay right on the beach next time.

What a great story! Sounds like it was a wonderful trip!
Rita says
It was an awesome trip. We did some video but since this trip was a weekend with no kids I later discovered that we don’t filter ourselves at all so I can’t post it.

Would like to visit someday and see those crabs!
Rita says
You should! It is not overly tourist filled which means you feel like it’s the off season even when it’s not.

That crab is fierce!! Last year, we moved to South Carolina, but we’re quite far from the Botany Bay area. It’s on my list of places to visit as we get settled in our new home state. Thanks for sharing your experience there.
Rita says
You are so welcome. My brother actually lives in Anderson so it was a good drive to go out to Botany Bay but he kept telling me about it and we finally made the trip together.

Sounds like you had a great time exploring this area. I last stayed at Wynham resort as a kid and I remember thinking it was a palace. But I guess as a kid a nice resort like that would seem like a palace.
Rita says
I am like that about some places from when I was a kid. We had a house when I was really little I remember as being huge but when I saw it again as an adult it was so small. We had the best time exploring the area. It was so much fun to just be with adults for a weekend.

That would be so cool to see, from a distance anyway! No wonder your brother was screaming, I would be too!
Rita says
He was so funny! They are so small when you see them but they sure are fierce.

What a funny story! We have visited several coastal places in South Carolina but I had not heard of Botany Bay. We will certainly check it out. Thanks!
Rita says
It was awesome! I have some other pictures that I took there I will try to remember to share with you all. MY brother goes every year, he loves it.
Zoey says
Yikes! Maybe it’s for the best you didn’t run into any alligators!
Rita says
I wanted to see one so bad. My luck though it would have eaten me.

I never been to Botany Bay, SC, however, we spent our honeymoon at Edisto Beach, SC. I remember crabs running everywhere, which was weird to me. As far as alligators, the first day we were there, I saw one take a dip in the resort pool. That was enough for me, never set foot in the pool area!
Rita says
We stayed at the resort but never saw a single one. My brother said he had seen them in past trips. Botany Bay is a little hidden down a dirt road before you come into Editso Beach. It is actually Botany Bay that you cross over when you cross the first bridge as you are going into Editso. Since we couldn’t go out to the beach there at the bay, the hurricane washed out the bridge to the beach, I didn’t get to take the pictures. However that beach with the trees growing out of the sand is one of the most photographed beaches. We had wanted to go and do some pictures for Lenore’s book covers but weren’t able to.

That was some crab!! Sounds like my luck!! 🙂 Funny story and at least it wasn’t an alligator…if the crabs are like that…I’d really hate to see the alligators!! Thanks for sharing!!
Rita says
You are so welcome. We saw some sea turtles at the resort as well but it was raining the day we saw them and didn’t get a good picture. I spent the whole trip watching for an alligator but never did. Although there were places that you just knew one was lurking.

I’ve never had the chance to visit SC, and Botany Bay sounds beautiful. That is a hilarious story about the crabs, & I think I’d be totally fascinated with the sight of them running across the road!
Rita says
We were so fascinated with them. The funny thing was after the crabs you come up on a tree with a sign telling about how the woman who originally lived there would picnic there. My brother made the remark that it looked just like a picnic spot….for the alligators. It was so creepy and the tree is right at the marsh.
Amber Ludwig says
Bahaha!! Omgosh!! What a tough little fighter!! So tiny but so scrappy!

This read gave me a good chuckle on this chilly morning! I love SC, but have never been to Botany Bay. It sounds like a great place to visit! Thank you for sharing this and putting a smile on my face!

Looks like you had a fun time! Botany Bay certainly sounds like an interesting place to visit.

That is funny but it did make for some good pictures. I would have run from that crab.
