Before you had kids, you probably didn’t have to overthink buying something new for the home. If you saw something you liked, and you had the extra money you just went ahead and bought it. Now, even if you have the money you probably have a mental battle in your head. Can you afford it? Do you need it? Would the money be better spent elsewhere? Although it is smart to make thoughtful buying decisions, sometimes a little something new can make you smile, even when you are ready to pull your hair out.
- Lamp Shades – You don’t need to splurge on new lamps, just buy new shades! You can even hit the fabric store and just get some cheap fabric on sale to cover the shades you have.
- Indoor Water Features – You probably think of indoor water features and automatically see dollar signs. Surprisingly, there are a lot of very affordable options out there. You don’t have to buy a huge one to make a significant impact. Any new water element will add positive energy to your space. If you are interested in an indoor fountain you can find some from online stores like IndoorFountainPros.com.
- Homemade Art – If you have ever walked through an art gallery, looked at a painting, and said, “My kids can do better than that!” it’s time to actually let them. Buy a canvas from an art store and let them create magic. It doesn’t have to be extravagant. Even hand prints in colors that match your décor will give your room a personal touch and instant facelift. Plus, it will make them feel quite proud that their art is on display. Try some macrame diy to spruce things up.
- Go to a Yard Sale – If you are already a yard sale junkie then you are well aware of the treasures that can be found. If you see the yard sale signs on the side of the road and stick your nose in the air, you don’t know what you are missing. You need to have an open mind. Old plates and baskets can be hung like art. You can even paint it. Old tables can be refinished or even wall-papered.
- Paint a Wall – You can paint an accent wall and make no other changes, and it will still look like you redecorated. Paint is fairly cheap, especially if you check the mistake aisle. Yes, a mistake aisle exists! Quite often, a color doesn’t come out the exact shade the buyer was looking for, so they try the shade again with a different paint. Where do all the mistake gallons go? To the very discounted mistake aisle!
I live in a small Georgia town that you most likely have never heard of and I LOVE it! My house is more than full as I am a single mother of four & caregiver to my aging mother and uncle. Lover of all things Outlander. Goes to the beat of her own drum woman.

Great ideas! I really need to do something to decorate my house, we had kids right away and so we didn’t take the time to decorate much. Now we kind of want to wait for them to get older….so furniture doesn’t get wrecked. It is very blah. I like your tips.
