Dia de los Reyes  or Three Kinds Day is a holiday that is celebrated in some Latin countries including Mexico which means it is celebrated in our home. On January 6, Dia de los Reyes is celebrated to honor the arrival of Reyes Magos (the Three Wise Men) arriving in Bethlehem with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh for baby Jesus. Children are given gifts just as Jesus received which is sort of like having another Christmas!

Since Christmas has just passed and the mountain of toys are still all over the place we agreed years ago that Dia de los Reyes gifts would celebrate family and bring us together in some way, if possible. We felt that since this day is to celebrate the birth of Jesus by the three kings we wanted the day to have a deeper meaning of unity. Best Buy understands that and in an effort to connect with their Latino consumer more directly, Best Buy is recognizing the important dates and holidays in Latino lives. The Tres Reyes initiative is a joint effort between Best Buy and Microsoft Xbox to celebrate Three Kings Day.

We already own an Xbox but didn’t have a Kinect which is what the kids will be waking up to this Dia de los Rey, along with a couple of games that the whole family will enjoy. I thought it would be great to spend the day just playing games and being together. There was plenty to choose from and Just Dance 4 was top on the list because it helps get us moving at the same time. I don’t really play the Xbox that much and have learned while buying the Kinect that it is much more than just a gaming system. You can have  radio, TV, movies, and even play online with other people. My brother wants me to play a game with him.

Best Buy even has me covered when buying gift cards for family members. I can purchase an e-gift card, they receive it in a few minutes through their emails and there are plenty of Spanish cards for me to choose from. Isn’t that just great?

    I have not heard of this holiday but this is what we teach our kids IS Christmas and the reason for it…that the 3 Wise men came bearing gifts to baby Jesus and THAT is why we gift at Christmas time. Kind of got mixed up with St. Nicholas I guess.

    • Oh and the gift would not help me celebrate really, it would just be a family gift so we can get rid of our non working one.

  10. Mine would be an iPhone 5 so I could talk with my family near and far,take pictures, face time, as well as listen to music with the familia. I am the only member in my family without a smartphone so this would be awesome!

  18. An iPad so we could look up Dia de los Reyes and learn more about it. My 5-year-old daughter attends a Spanish language magnet school and is learning about many Latin cultures and traditions. Last month, she was chosen to play Mary in her kindergarten class’s Las Posadas celebration!
