“One-Bowl Cakes are the Forgotten Gems in the World of Home Baking”
Food Writer and cake baker Camilla V.Saulsbury has outdone herself with this cookbook Piece of Cake! I adore the concept of this book! It’s like a nod back to the old days when pioneers only used one bowl to bake a cake and were done with it. Those were the old fashioned ways of doing things and I’m glad this book is bringing them back. (Piece of Cake), One Bowl Cakes is the way baking should be. Who has the time to do all that creaming of butter and sugar anyway in another bowl? It’s the simple things in life that are the best so I’m glad to have found this cookbook with the easiest recipes possible for baking my favorite snacking treats-The Cake! Easier than a mix these cakes come together swiftly and they are healthier for you too. I don’t know what else a person could expect.
Piece of Cake! is also unique in the fact that the hardcover edition is spiral bound making it lie flat while you’re assembling your ingredients together which is a real plus if you ask me. I don’t know how many times I’ve lost my page in a cookbook because when I turned back around it was closed. That is very depressing because you have to stop and go find the recipe again and you will have to remember where it was you left off with the ingredients. It’s a flustery mess. So Piece of Cake is right on the money with this spiral bound book.
Another newer option I noticed is the addition of one single layer cakes. I appreciate those because I personally don’t always need a big 3 or 4 layer cake sitting on my counter-top. It’s just more temptation and willpower than I can muster. So a single layer is good. It gives everyone a slice and maybe a small one for the next day and you’re done with it. That is definitely a nice change in the cake World. There are sever Loaf Cakes in Piece of Cake to consider and those are extra special since you can slice them into thin slices like a sandwich if you’d like. I find loaf cakes best for freezing too for your enjoyment later.
A large Sheet Cake is by far my favorite since it’s just dirtying up one bowl to make the batter and then one single pan to bake it. It’s the absolute best way to bake a cake. Plus the pieces are easier to cut in whatever size you need. I often use cookie cutters to cut out pieces of cake from a sheet pan. Small kids just squeal with excitement when they have their own extravagant shaped cake.

It even has a section on making you own homemade cake mixes which I thought was very clever. Every recipe has extremely helpful baking tips, storage instructions and ideas and tons of variation ideas. There is a lot to discover in this Piece of Cake! There are even tips for baking gluten-free which being diabetic I am trying to do more often as it does help with diabetes. So are ready to bake up your own simple masterpiece? You will be charged to go when you see the creations inside.
Marmalade Cake was my favorite from the book that I have already made. You decorate the top layer with fresh sliced oranges so it’s super pretty and delicious. Her cream cheese frosting is great too but you’ll be able to find dozens of awesome easy to fix desserts.
I live in a small Georgia town that you most likely have never heard of and I LOVE it! My house is more than full as I am a single mother of four & caregiver to my aging mother and uncle. Lover of all things Outlander. Goes to the beat of her own drum woman.
