Our environment can heavily influence creativity and productivity in creating music. Sure, you can master a particular instrument through mindful and consistent practice, but having a great musical environment enhances your ability to play. In order to be successful in playing or creating music, you will need to have a great and supportive environment where you can freely express your creativity. Just like with music, an environment where you can be more creative and be more exposed to music is tremendously important.
Here are five tips on how you can create the best music environment around you.
- Have a dedicated space for music.
No matter how serene and peaceful your home can be, having a personal space dedicated to music can deeply enhance one’s ability to focus on playing or creating music. Just like an art studio, having a room or space solely intended for music can help anyone keep away from distractions from any types of disturbances.
- Avoid placing your instruments near the windows.
Windows are great, but for a great music studio or space, it would be best to stay away from it as much as you can. Windows translate sound vibrations and they also allow you be distracted from the movements and sound from the outside. These are critical issues especially if you are recording your music. A tiny bit of sound of a car driving or the sound of people talking outside can be very frustrating. This is why you need to place your instruments away from windows and if possible, try putting on a heavy curtain to keep away the unwanted sounds from coming in.
- Invest in good quality light fixtures.
Depending on your preferences, set the mood of your music environment by putting a good lighting fixture. Cool lamps or LED’s are great for setting a cool mode in your music space. Be creative in designing your room and some inspiration such as memorabilia, posters, and pictures – anything that can make the room more cozy and relaxed. The more comfortable you are with your music environment, the more likely you are able to play or create good quality music.
- Hold regular music sessions.
A music environment is not just the physical space you are using to play music. It is also about the people and activities surrounding you that create a great music environment. Holding a regular music session can encourage you more to play any musical instrument because you have something to look forward to. It does not have to be grand. A small gathering of your family and friends for a weekend session perhaps is already a good way to entertain everyone.
- Have healthy food and drinks handy in your music space.
Musicians have to rest their ears and take breaks regularly. It is important that you practice this as well and keep healthy food and beverages near your music space. For instance, keep a kettle near your music room so you can easily get some tea to rest your voice from singing.
I live in a small Georgia town that you most likely have never heard of and I LOVE it! My house is more than full as I am a single mother of four & caregiver to my aging mother and uncle. Lover of all things Outlander. Goes to the beat of her own drum woman.

My son plays guitar. Back in the day, I turned what might have been a dining room into a music room. It does help to have a dedicated space.
