Dead Silence

Feb 10, 2014 | Rita

I don’t know if any if you have ever been to a rosary service but what happens is the priest says a few things, there a reading and then the rosary is recited. Sounds simple right? WRONG! In any other family chances are it is very simple but lets face it we are anything but simple.

At my uncles rosary service the priest spoke. He talked about my uncle by reading the obituary. The first thought through my mind was “he didn’t know my uncle?” Okay no big deal I guess. My cousin J was thinking it as well because she started pulling my hair from behind. Usually the priest is the one from your church when possible but maybe his priest was unavailable.

So then the reading took place, it was one of Paul’s letters. It was very pretty. The lady that gave the reading was from my uncle’s prayer group. She sat down and that is when it happened…..dead silence. I mean you could hear a pin drop in that chapel. So we all look around waiting for the priest and ya’ll he is asleep! I am not making this up he is all but snoring in the pew. My other uncle says ” Padre your up.” and we get nothing. For like five minutes there isn’t a sound one.

The lady that did the reading finally lead the rosary and the father slept soundly until the end.  He gets up reads the obituary again and ends the service.  I have no idea where they found him at but he was one of the highlights. He kept mentioning my aunt that had passed away as well but never said she had passed away. He talked about the food and went so far off course that after we were rolling we were laughing so hard. There are more stories about him.

That has got to be the strangest rosary ever! I have been to many rosaries over the years. I am used to the Father asking if anyone would like to speak about the person who is departed. I will be honest and say that there is nothing worse then a priest giving a service for someone they didn’t know. It just seems so awkward. At least your family could see the humor in the situation.

No, I have never been to a rosary service. However, this sounds like quite the service! So awkward that the priest was sleeping and kept sleeping, despite the best efforts to wake him. And then for him to just stand up, read the obituary again, and sit down is so weird. What the heck?!!
