This is part of a sponsored campaign with DiMe Media and Hass Avocado Board. However, all opinions expressed are my own.
I bet there is at least a hundred people in my audience that has type 2 diabetes. In fact the number may actually be higher. In my family with have both type 1 and type 2 which means we have to pay closer attention to the foods we eat. Especially when we have a get together. If we are having anything at my house then I make sure that the entire menu is diabetic friendly. It just makes things easier and we almost always have some Hass Avocados on hand to snack on or even to mash-up as a substitute for mayo on sandwiches.
There are a lot of different reasons to choose avocados for your snacking pleasure especially when you have type 2 diabetes. As you most likely already know there are good fats and bad fats. What you may not know is that over 75% of the fat in avocados is naturally good fat which means they are perfect for mashing and using instead of mayo because it is high in bad (saturated) fat. That is a big plus for me since you all know that I am the caregiver for several family members. Avocados are pretty much the only fruit (yes they are a fruit) that contains monounsaturated fat, and they are sodium, cholesterol and trans-fat free.
That little meter above is how my Ma, sister, Tia, and other members of my family check their blood sugar everyday. I also check mine because I am a borderline diabetic which means I am pretty close to type 2 diabetes. Did you know that Latinos share the issue of higher type 2 diabetes rates across their community? It’s true and paying attention to the foods you eat can make all the difference. Type two diabetes can be maintained with a healthy weight and diet. It is only once you go on the shots that there is no going back.
One thing that helps is having a diet rich in foods containing fiber (if you have stomach issues then this is also a good idea) have been found to possibly reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. Avocados contain 8% of your daily recommended value (DV) fiber per 1 serving of avocado. Not to mention fiber adds bulk to your diet and can help provide a feeling of fullness. Which means you will eat less! 🙂
The hardest thing for my family is during the summer months the diabetics want ice cream as well. Luckily my cousin gave me a recipe that my tia loves and her hermana will eat. In my one tia will only eat this and I am thankful because during the summer we have a tradition of going to the lake and the park. It is just a way to connect more as a familia and give us a sense of togetherness. This avocado ice cream is rich and creamy but I reserve it for the adults! I will share the recipe with you down below so you have try it out. Like I said it is perfectly fine for those that have diabetes. It is low-calorie. Now it does contain sugar and I tried a substitute once but it did not do as well. As long as no one eats the entire container you are good to go. Which means I have to hide from both of tias as well as Ma.

I live in a small Georgia town that you most likely have never heard of and I LOVE it! My house is more than full as I am a single mother of four & caregiver to my aging mother and uncle. Lover of all things Outlander. Goes to the beat of her own drum woman.

I appreciate that you acknowledge that there are two types of diabetes. Yes they affect the way you eat, but they are different diseases. So many people get this wrong and as a type one I appreciate that you acknowledge there are two types of this disease. Thank you for helping spread awareness.

We use avocados a lot with our dinners…tacos/fajitas/sandwiches etc. Very tasty! Guacamole is one of my very favorite dips!
Jennifer Boehme says
Not true. You can be on shots and revert back to pills or nothing. I hate when people scare people about diabetes. I was on the insulin shots, and none now and blood sugars are low normal and not near 300, just exercise, that helps the blood sugars the most, even a little a day. And avocados, gross.
