I am always packing snacks and other things for the kids when we are in the car. We usually travel to my brother’s a few times a year which is a four hour drive one way. Then when Edgar is working out of town we go to wherever he is so we can have more quality family time together. All that packing and all those crazy plastic snack bags are more than I can handle. I love searching out new products that will serve more than one purpose. I mean lets face it I hate buying five different things that I only use for one item at a time and rarely ever at the same time. Enter Ecolunchbox! ECOLunchbox was found by mom, Sandra Ann Harris, in an effort to avoid the throw-away plastic baggies and all the plastics.
From Sandra Ann Harris:
My kids were in preschool when I started the daily battle of the lunch. What to pack? (Answer: healthy stuff they’ll eat!) How to pack it? (Answer: containers they can open & close and that don’t fill up the garbage can!). Trouble was my kids couldn’t open a lot of the little tight-lidded plastic containers I used for cut fruits, yogurts and other snacks. So I often resorted to plastic baggies because they were cheap, easy to open/close and contained things both wet and dry. But I wasn’t happy with the waste we were creating. I tried using recyclable wax paper bags, but sandwiches dried out and wet stuff, like cut fruit, turned the wax paper to mush, creating a big mess. My next experiment in lunchware was with the cute Japanese bento boxes I discovered in San Francisco’s Japantown. My daughter especially loved the Hello Kitty designs! These bentos were really decorative and fun, but wouldn’t fit sandwiches and the plastic hinges broke easily. And I wasn’t interested in continuing to use plastic. Bad news on plastic and its danger to people and the planet kept emerging as the years passed. At that time, hard plastics (like the Nalgene bottles) were believed to be generally safe. The squeezy plastics (like Ketchup and mayonnaise bottles) were to be avoided. Yet studies were showing that even the hard plastics could pose health hazards.
That is when ECOlunbox was born. She found a way to create her own bento boxes that work without the hinges breaking and can be used over and over again. ECOlunchbox also solves the worry over whether or not the platic you are using is harmful for your children and your environment. It is super user freindly and ECOlunbox has everything you need from soft goods such as lunch bags to accessories such as bamboo utensils.
TESTING ECOlunbox:
We recieved a Stainless Steel Solo Cube to review. It is sandwich sized and fits perectly into a lunch bag, your purse or diaper bag. I used it for small snacks while in the car as well as for keeping all Victoria’s crayons together on a different trip. I love that I can throw it in the dshwasher or hand wash it. However you cannot put stainless steel in the microwave ever. I also love that if I put spagehti sauce in it there will be no stains after I take it out. Take that plastic! victoria loves how easy it is for her to use. She simply pulls the top off and she is ready to eat whatever wonderful sandwich or snack I have packed. ECOlunbox has many different sizes inclusing a dipper, rectangles, and circle.
PROS of ECOlunbox:
- GREAT for the environment
- Easy for kids to use
- VERY stylish, the bags are colorful and brioght without being harmful
CONS of ECOlunchbox:
- NONE
