Much like many other industries, the music industry has certainly changed a lot. These significant changes are something that can help new musicians, producers, and anyone wanting to break into the music industry, do so with more success. It’s often about what you know and who you know that helps get that foot in the door.
With that being said, here are five changes that have changed the music industry forever.

1. Digital steaming
Digital streaming has certainly shifted the way we listen to music. While the days of radio are still present for many, the shift from physical media like CDs and Vinyls has switched to digital streaming platforms like Apple Music and Spotify.
Vinyls are perhaps the only type of physical music media that’s survived, with many no longer listening to cassette tapes or CDs.
These digital streaming platforms have revolutionized how people access and listen to music in general and therefore has led to a decline in physical sales as a result.
2. Social media
Social media platforms have become powerful tools that artists can make use of when it comes to connecting with fans and promoting their music in general.
Building a brand nowadays is all part of finding success in the music industry, which is why platforms like TikTok and Instagram have become great places for those looking to discover new music and artists. For the artists themselves, it’s a helpful way of getting their music out there without needing to have representation.
As such, producers of music and record labels have to shift and change with the direction that music and artists take, with the likes of Clive Davis continuing to thrive even in an ever-changing landscape.
3. Auto-tune
The introduction of auto-tune was certainly a big thing and has been used by plenty of artists since its inception in the music industry. Initially, it was intended to correct the pitch of the artists, but it has been widely used since as a creative tool to alter sounds and vocals.
While it’s received some discontent from those in the industry and those who listen to music avidly, it’s a part of the music industry that has likely evolved in new and exciting ways.
4. Digital distribution
Digital distribution channels have made a big impact on how we listen to music and how easy it has become for the everyday artist to release their music. Being able to globally bypass the traditional gatekeepers like record labels, many new artists have managed to make a significant impact on their careers before even getting in front of record labels themselves.
From iTunes to Spotify, this sort of distribution for their artists and their music is golden and something that has changed the landscape forever.
5. Evolving and adapting business models
With the music industry, it’s adapted to the digital age that we all live in now, and as such, it’s been a powerful tool for many to use it for new revenue streams. It also helps to change the way artists make money and how listeners of music can interact with their chosen artists online or offline.

The music industry has changed drastically! I loved listening to albums on our record player and then the cassette tape came out and we could listen on walkmans! WOW! Now, now we can listen to music online, on our phones, on earbuds…just mind boggling!
Things have come a long way.
I don’t know how they determine the charts now, with the market so fragmented and streaming revenues so small.
