Friday has rolled around again, which means it is time for Friday Cocktails! It is Friday the 13th and my mother is full of superstitions. How many of you believe in these superstitions? I thought this week I would share a little about the origins of this unlucky day, along with a few of my mother’s favorite superstitions. After all, she is spouting them off like they are the rules for living today. I don’t mean to sound sarcastic. It’s a bit funny.
First up is the fact that this day has not one but two words that mean “fear of the day.” If any of you can pronounce these, then more power to you. They are: paraskavedekatriaphobia and friggatriskaidekaphobia. Although those are more or less the fears of the number thirteen, for someone with either of those phobias, the 13th of the month is a constant concern. I bet today, though, people with those phobias are climbing the walls.
words
Every culture has a reason for this day being considered unlucky. In Norse, it is the god Loki who crashes a banquet, bringing the number of gods to thirteen. The blind god Hodr was tricked by Loki into shooting his brother Balder (who happens to be the god of light, joy, and goodness), killing him instantly. In Christianity, it is the Last Supper, which had 13 guests (Jesus and his 12 disciples) and took place on Thursday but led to Jesus’ crucifixion on Good Friday.
Now, I thought I would share 13 superstitions for today, including some of my mother’s favorite ones. Let me know if you have heard of these and what you believe!
- Many high rise buildings don’t have a 13th floor nor do planes have a 13th row. Although this is a bit weird. After all if you count those floor unless it stops at 12 there really is a 13th floor.
- Don’t comb your hair on Friday the 13th. If a bird uses your fallen hair to build a nest, you might go bald.
- Getting your haircut on Friday the 13th will result in the death of a family member.
- Walking under a ladder will result in your hanging.
- Children born on Friday the 13th will be unlucky for life.
- Don’t pass a funeral procession or you will die tomorrow.
- If you get a $13 tattoo today be sure to leave a $7 tip. Not sure what will happen but my mother told me this.
- Avoid a black cat from crossing your path today at all costs. Again I don’t know why but it considered really bad luck today.
- Check your shirts! Be sure not to wear them inside out today.
- Don’t walk over three drains. I’m not sure if this is three in a row or just three in general. Also why would you be walking over a drain? Does the drain in the shower count?
- Salute a magpie if you see one today. I live in the country and don’t think I would even know what a magpie looked like.
- Don’t open that umbrella indoors today. Although my mother says this every time we pull out an umbrella.
- Finally, if you spill slt be sure to throw it over your left shoulder.

I had a nice week as I video chatted with my son Gary who is in California, my son Derek who is moving to Florida on the 25th and my baby son Aaron who is closer to home and excited that his boys will be starting school in September. I also chatted with my eldest, my daughter Melissa who is in NYC. The weather has been warm here and we were forced to put the AC in the window a few weeks early.

My week was a bit frustrating, but then again, I beginning to believe it will always be that way! I have heard of some of these superstitions, but not all of them and like you I always wonder why or what will happen? But I can tell you that someone born on the 13th is not a bad thing, My daughter was born on the only Friday the 13th of the year! She has since has quite a few birthdays on Friday the 13th and I consider every one of them to be quite lucky! Have a fantastic weekend!
