Friday has rolled around again, which means it is time for Friday Cocktails! This week we had to go to the surgeon because Ma needs her gallbladder removed. It is a pretty simple surgery, I had it about ten years ago. However, I am a little nervous because of her age and the fact that she has a lung disease. Her lungs no longer function properly so she is on oxygen. I don’t know how that will affect the surgery itself.
She’s nervous too but honestly, she needs it to come out. She is having pain that I know is horrible. One that pain starts the only way to stop it is to have the thing removed. That’s pretty much all we have done this week. She had her yearly Medicare appointment. The one where they check her congestive stuff and whatever else.
Oh wait!
We were with Ma’s friend this week when she dang near got us killed. She pulled right out in front of another car and then froze. She never looked left and honestly it has left Ma really shaken up. Her friend wanted us to rife with her instead of meeting her there. Next time we will offer to drive her.
This Week’s Cocktail
This week’s cocktail is the Martini and one most of you are familiar with. Now for those who are wondering James Bond’s martini is a Vesper Martini. The drink was named after Vesper Lynd ,one of the only women he truly loved, and why Bond’s drinks are always shaken, not stirred. It was a very strong drink but sadly one we will never get to try. Two of the ingredients, Gordon’s Gin and vodka, are available anywhere. However the aromatized wine, Kina Lillet, which gives the Vesper its distinct, bitter edge, no longer exists.
Ingredients
- 2½ ounces gin or vodka
- ½ ounce dry vermouth
- ½ ounce olive brine IF making a dirty martini
- 3 olives (always an odd number NEVER an even number of olives. Odd is for luck.)
- ice
Instructions
- Chill martini glass in freezer for about 10 minutes or fill martini glass with ice and set aside while preparing the cocktail
- Fill a shaker or mixing glass with ice
- Add spirits and dry vermouth (and olive brine if making a dirty martini)
- Stir for 30 seconds
- Using a strainer, pour into chilled martini glass
- Garnish with a spear of olives

Not to be a downer but it has been a frustrating week for me. Still dealing with this constant knee pain and still no definitive answers as to what is causing it. Still having trouble standing and walking so not able to get as much done as I need to. There has been a lot of family drama going on as well so that has been adding to my stress and frustration as I can do little to help those I care for. Still hoping that next week will be better…
