When it comes to sewing most parents do not think about teaching their kids how to sew until they are much older. However there are many sewing activities that even small children can do that can help them to learn to love to sew. Here are some examples:
- Button Art – Even small children love to play with buttons. I remember as a child my mother would give me a jar of buttons and I would thread them into necklaces and ornaments for the Christmas tree. As I got older I would sew buttons on scrap material and create works of art. Buttons are a fun way to introduce children to sewing.
- Bean Bags – Bean bags are used in a variety of children’s games and are very east to make. Just take two small pieces of material of the same size and have the children sew the edges together leaving a small opening. Pour in beans or rice and then sew shut. Kids can decorate the bean bag with glitter, markers or buttons to create a one of a kind bag.
- Tote Bags – A tote bag can be used to carry around books, toys, papers and more. It is very easy for children to make. Take two pieces of notebook sized material. Sew three of the edges together to form a pocket. Then take two strips of material about an inch wide and eight inches long. Sew to the opening as handles. Decorate the bag and use or give away as a gift.
- Name Art – Children love to use their names in art, so why not sew their name? Using a large stencil cut out the letters of their name or nickname. Make sure you have two identical pieces for each letter. Have the kids lay the letters out and then sew together the back and front of each letter, stuffing as they go to create little letter pillows. After the letters are complete you can sew on ribbon hangers or use a large ribbon to create a name banner. This works great as art in a child’s room and it is something they can keep forever.
These are just a few of the fun crafts that you can do with your children. From toddler to teen kids can learn to love to sew at any age and any skill level. Just find a project that they will enjoy and have fun!

My girls are very interested in sewing, but at 3 and 5 I’m hesitant to let them loose with a needle and thread. I’d like to try making beanbags with them, though. I wonder if fabric glue would work?

These are some good ideas. My wife does handmade jewelry, using fabrics and other craft-related art pieces and she started out by learning to sew a simple change purse.

The bean bags are nice and can be both useful and impressive. Children will really love to learn the steps in making these sewing crafts.

I remember doing the buttons crafts with my grandma and making necklace and bracelets. She sewed a lot and had a big tin can full of all kinds of buttons. It was a lot of fun too making these button jewelry pieces. The bean bags sound fun to make too.
