Garlic Fingers

Mar 07, 2014 | Rita

I recently minced fresh garlic and wash my hands without things about anything. The next morning as I was laying in the bed I smelled this horrible smell and then I realized what had happened. The garlic had gotten under my fingernails and I didn’t do anything to get it out. So now my hands smelled awful, I mean to the point that I wanted to gag. I went straight to the bathroom and washed and scrubbed under my nails.

What I learned though is that smell of garlic is much harder to get out than it is is to get in. Nothing worked. I went in search of what to do. I soaked my hands in lemons, it got rid of the smell for just a bit but then it came back. I ran a spoon all over my hands and under my nails. It worked well on my hands but under the nails was a different story. Salt? I tried it and while it burned the paper-cut I didn’t realized I had it didn’t do anything for the smell. There are all sorts of things on the internet for you to try and do.

What I ended up doing was cutting my nails off and then scrubbing them really well. It taught me a very valuable lesson, one that I didn’t forget when I had to use garlic again. Put a little plastic baggie over your hands while to chop garlic and then the smell is on the bag and not your hands. It is either that or buy pre-minced garlic which might not be a bad thing.

The only thing that is bad as mincing garlic is onions. But I do like your tip about the plastic baggie. I will have to try that next time.

My husband hates the smell of garlic so I have to be really careful. I am definitely trying your baggie idea – what a great tip.

I never thought of putting a baggie over my hands but that is a great idea. I usually buy a jar of already minced garlic it is so much easier.

It works really well. I use this trick for working with peppers too.

Even without being there I can smell your garlicky fingernails, lol!

Good to know–it’s usually onions for me.
