When you were younger, hanging out with friends probably meant going clubbing or to bars or generally enjoying nightlife of some kind. When you get older and work long hours, have kids and are busy most of the time, going out drinking loses a lot of its appeal. Going to bed early and getting a full night’s sleep probably appeals more! But that doesn’t mean you need to lose touch with your girlfriends, and keeping bonds close and spending quality time together is so important as it adds so much to your life in adulthood.
It allows you to maintain a part of your identity that’s not linked to being a partner or a mother, and sometimes a few hours laughing with friends is just what the doctor ordered. But what else is there to do when you don’t want to be out partying til the wee hours? Here are a few ideas for classy entertaining at home.
Coffee Morning
Coffee mornings are usually held in order to raise money for charity, so why not do something for a good cause and see your friends at the same time! Bake some cakes and other treats, brew some pots of tea and get the coffee machine on. Guests can contribute some money and whatever you raise can go to a charity of your choice. You get to chat around the coffee table and have a lovely morning together- it’s a win win situation! You could choose a charity close to your heart, or perhaps a group or individual is currently campaigning to raise money. You could support them by raising a little money for them.
Afternoon Tea
With spring and summer right around the corner, we all want to head outside and enjoy the garden while soaking up some sunshine. Afternoon tea is an elegant way to do this, serve up a selection of finger sandwiches, delicate pastries and scones with jam and clotted cream on a variety of cake stands. Serve pots of tea with mismatched china for a cute and rustic look, you can get these cheaply from charity shops. A nice way to get outside, sit on some beautiful pieces of brown rattan garden furniture and enjoy some food, drink and great company when the weather is good.
Dinner Party
If you fancy doing something later in the evening, but that doesn’t involve staying up all night then a dinner party is a great idea. It allows you to glam up and enjoy some wine and sophistication while showing off your cooking skills. Serve up some canapes along with a three course meal for some very happy guests. If you wanted to keep things a little more casual or make it extra fun, why not ask each guest to bring a course each and do a ‘potluck’ style dinner party? This works out a little cheaper for you as you’re not providing all of the food, and you get to sample your friends cooking too.
What are your favorite ways to entertain friends at home? Perhaps roast dinner on a Sunday, barbecues in the summer, pool parties or something else entirely?
I live in a small Georgia town that you most likely have never heard of and I LOVE it! My house is more than full as I am a single mother of four & caregiver to my aging mother and uncle. Lover of all things Outlander. Goes to the beat of her own drum woman.

I love hosting a garden party – with sandwiches and ice cold lemonade – in the summer. Everyone brings a couple of cuttings or transplants from their garden to exchange. Always fun!
