Going Green

Apr 18, 2016 | Rita

Go green!

I will tell you now that I have been working towards getting my home green for a number of years now. Are we there? Nope not yet but it is a work in progress. It really isn’t as easy as I thought it would be. I switched us over to reusable grocery bags and that took me a couple of years to get everyone in the house to always use them. Although I do admit that I use produce bags for raw meat when I buy it. I just can’t seem to not do that because I don’t want meat juice all over everything. My only excuse is that those bags are much smaller and I do put as many packs of meat into them as I can to keep the number done.

I am always reading information about making the house green and leaving less of a footprint on the environment. Getting those tips on going green really helps and while I will admit that some don’t work or go over as well as others it is always worth a try. For example I didn’t know that a roll of toilet paper takes between 10 and 37 gallons of water to manufacture while a bidet only uses 1/4 of a gallon. I use one to two rolls all by myself a day! Guess who is going to install a bidet as soon as possible. I didn’t realize that and the toilet paper usage is a weird quirk of my OCD.

I can tell you that we had window film installed last year. I had it done to cut energy costs because our home is old and needs all new windows but that is not something that is in the budget at the moment. Another thing the house needs is new blinds and I know that when I get them I plan on getting bamboo ones. Bamboo blinds is one of the greenest choices because the carbon footprint is very low. There are plenty of other things that we do to try and ct our footprint. For example we are part of a CSA where we get fresh fruits and vegetables every week which really saves us a lot. It also helps the farmers in our area be more productive. Now I don’t know if that is going green and all but my budget and health appreciates it. I like knowing that I am doing my part regardless of how small to ensure that the planet is around for not only my children but for children many generations to come.

I need new blinds for the upstairs. I didn’t know that about bamboo – plus I think that look would be great.

Oh that is neat on the window film! I was just reading about that the other day! I really need to do that here! Love the idea of the Bamboo blinds!
