Guest Post: Broken Vessels Author Lucie Ulrich

Broken Vessels

I like to classify myself as a realistic dreamer. My dreams are never so far-fetched that they’re unattainable, but challenging enough to push me out of my comfort zone. Of all the dreams I’ve accomplished, publishing a book pretty much tops the list. I penned my first novel at the age of forty-seven, with a goal of being published by the time I hit fifty. Eight years beyond my goal, and four novels later, Broken Vessels was released. Though the journey took longer than expected, I have no regrets. This old dog had to learn a few new tricks when it came to publishing and publicizing. What a ride!

Broken Vessels takes place in one of my favorite cities, Colorado Springs, Colorado. My husband and I love the mountains, but currently live on a sand bar called Florida. This is what makes writing novels such a blast. While I’m sitting in my air-conditioned den, my characters are whitewater rafting down the Arkansas River, or celebrating Christmas on a ranch in Wyoming.

Though mystery and suspense are some of my favorite reads, when I sit down to write I find myself drawn to hurting people. Broken Vessels, being a perfect example. Life isn’t easy, and I’ll grant you it’s unlikely so much drama would befall one family, but the pain Luke, Emma, Jimmy, Mac and Louise feel is a reflection of what many of us deal with on a daily basis. The key for me is to give each character the opportunity to make sure they aren’t left broken. Some choose well, others don’t.

My faith is evident throughout my writing. It’s a clear reflection of where I came from and who I am today. It’s never my intention to preach to my readers, however It’s simply an aspect of my life that I can’t live without. If I were to summarize Broken Vessels in on sentence, I’d say it’s a story of faith, family and forgiveness.
