Hello Buffalo Plaid + Painting a Table

I ordered new dining table chairs in the cutest buffalo plaid. The problem was my table wouldn’t match and I didn’t want to spend the money on a new one. So after lots of thoughts and plenty of debate I decided I needed to paint the table I had. I had no idea how I was gonna do that but my uncle came to my recuse. He went to the store and got what we needed.

The first step was take the table outside and turn it over. We decided we would paint the legs only and leave the top the same. Taking one of our outdoor tables we turned the table on it’s top with a rug underneath to protect the top.

I taped a line all the way around to protect from any over spray.

As you can see in the very first picture the legs were white and then we primed them with grey. Now we just used spray paint so that it would be easier. Because the legs had a decorative cut (that ball thing) my uncle said that spray paint would look better and be smoother.

We used Fusion All-in-One Glass Black spray paint that we got at the local hardware store because the plaid we were using was black and white. We did not bother to paint the underside since it wouldn’t ever be seen unless you crawled under the table.

The spray paint did really well on the legs. There was no running or dripping and we both double checked each part to ensure everything was painted. We actually did this towards the end of August and it was over a hundred degrees outside. That means it didn’t take a couple of hours for the table to dry and be able to go back into the house.

We put folders under the legs to protect the carpet just in case and then left the table for 24 hours to be sure it had dried completely. My uncle said that was the best way to do it. We also left the top of the table the lighter color it was originally because it stood out more.

Buffalo Plaid

I wanted to let you see the buffalo plaid up close before you saw the finished project. I saw these in a magazine and just fell in love with them. I ended up getting them from Montgomery Wards (their catalog to be precise) and they came in sets of two. There are some bar stools as well that I am thinking about getting for my island.

I can’t begin to tell you how much I love these chairs. I say an accent chair in the same pattern for the living room but it would mean having to change so much if I got it. I’m thinking about redoing my office area though next year and adding it in there. I may even see about doing my desk chair in that fabric. This fabric would be perfect for teachers chairs though. Since my living room, office area, dining room, and kitchen are actually one very large open room it would tie them all together nicely.

The Finished Look

Everything came together nicely and you can see it all looks great with the new chairs. I need new curtains but I have found the ones that I think I want. Well, I have it narrowed down to different ones and need to make a final decision.

  1. I really like the idea of repainting the table to make it work with the chairs. It is really different and fun. I like a personal touch, something different than regular store bought cookie cutter furniture, so repainting this took it up a notch.

    • Me too. I wanted something that was me. I also hated the idea of getting a new table when there was nothing wrong with the one we have.

    • Thank. I am planning on posting an updated picture with the new curtains. I am hoping to have them in the next month or so. I think I have finally decided on the colors and such that I want to go in that area.

    • I got them online at Montgomery Wards. We did have to put the legs on them when they arrived but it was very easily done.

  19. Buffalo plaid is a fun look. When I first read “buffalo plaid” I thought of red lumberjack plaid. I must say I like the black and white better than my minds’ image.

The table looks great – warm wood and that black paint to go with the chairs — but that black and white buffalo plaid on the chairs is what really makes it all look modern and stylish, yet warm and homey at the same time. So I put you on notice – I’m just going to have to steal it!

    • Thank you. As I said I would love to take all the credit but my uncle helped so much. He was a carpenter before he was forced to retire.

  47. I like howyou repurposed the table rather than getting new. It looks nice. I also like the plaid and itlooks clean and nice. I am a huge advocate of using what you have first and this looks great.

  54. The chairs look great. I love crafting and adding my own touch to things. I think it’s much cheaper to do it myself too.

    • It is much cheaper. I looked at new tables and couldn’t believe how much they cost. I even looked at unfinished ones and they were still pretty expensive.

    • I agree about the curtains. I have finally made a decision on them and will be getting the new ones soon. I promise to post a pic with the new ones.

    • Thank you. My uncle did help me but truthfully we just took our time. We both made sure that we checked behind one another for drips or runs.
