From April 6 to May 3, 2015 U.S. Walmarts will run the program which could not come at a better time. The campaign will help the 140 million customers who shop at Walmart across the country each week to join in the fight against hunger. When I said it couldn’t come at a better time I meant it. As someone who volunteers at the local food bank I know how short our bank runs during the spring. In fact Feeding America data suggests that many food banks experience a decline in food donations during the first quarter of the year, leaving food inventory at a low point at the start of each spring.
So see it couldn’t come at a more needed time. One of the great things is that all funds will go toward supporting Feeding America and its 200 local member food banks. Not to mention, Walmart’s suppliers Campbell’s, ConAgra Foods, General Mills, Kellogg Company, Kraft, and Unilever all aim to donate enough to help Feeding America secure 75 million meals for its member food banks.
Walmart customers can also make a donation directly to their local Feeding America food bank at the store register during checkout.
How to Participate
There are three easy ways for you to participate:
- Products. When Walmart customers purchase one of 240 participating products in Walmart stores nationwide, a donation will be generated by the product supplier. For every participating item purchased, a meal will be secured for the local Feeding America food bank.
- Donations. Walmart customers can donate on behalf of a local Feeding America food bank at the cash register during
- Photo Sharing. Anyone can take a picture of six friends who share their commitment to fight hunger and post the picture on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter as a public post with the hashtag #WeSparkChange. The six people in the photo represent the one in six people who face food insecurity in the U.S. (help Walmart reach its goal by posting multiple pictures, tagging friends and giving friends a 48-hour challenge to do the same.)
Walmart is making social media work as well! For every public post connected to the hashtag #WeSparkChange, Walmart will donate $10, up to a maximum donation of $1.5 million, to Feeding America and its member food banks. The amount raised from the social media photo challenge is on top of Walmart’s initial $1.5 million donation, resulting in a potential total donation of $3 million to Feeding America and its member food banks.
Twitter Party
On Friday, April 24, at 1 p.m. ET be sure to join The Motherhood for a #WeSparkChange Twitter party. There will be prizes and more! You can get details here.
I live in a small Georgia town that you most likely have never heard of and I LOVE it! My house is more than full as I am a single mother of four & caregiver to my aging mother and uncle. Lover of all things Outlander. Goes to the beat of her own drum woman.

What a simple way to give back! We donate regularly to our church’s Food Pantry. It always make me feel so lucky that I am in a position to donate. I always think “But for the grace of God” I could be the one at the food bank looking for help. Thanks for sharing this great info!

What an awesome program! I was just at Walmart and didn’t see any signage for this. I have to go back tomorrow and will have to look around more closely.

Such a good cause. It breaks my heart to think of families going hungry when we have so much more food than we need in America.

I will definitely take part. I hate the thought of anyone being hungry. It’s a basic need.

What a great cause! Locally residents where I live are creating a weekend backpack lunch program for students – they pick up a bag of food to take home for the weekend so they have enough snacks and lunches for the weekend 🙂
