Hetty Wainthropp Investigates: The Complete Collection

I reviewed this dvd set way back in 2010 and thought I would do an update on it. The review I did back then just didn’t seem to do this series justice. Back then it was always just a short three hundred words. So get ready for Hetty!

The English comedy-drama Hetty Wainthropp Investigates stars Patricia Routledge (Coronation Street, Keeping Up Appearances) as Hetty and Dominic Monaghan(LOST, The Lord of the Rings) in his breakthrough role as Geoffrey.

Set in northwest England, the show follows the adventures of Hetty Wainthropp, a 60-something amateur sleuth who thinks if herself as a female Poirot in this collection of humorous detective stories.

Hetty Wainthropp Investigates – The Complete Collection features 27 classic episodes such as “The Bearded Lady,” “A Rose by Any Other Name,” “All Stitched Up,” and “Mind over Muscle.”

MY THOUGHTS

If you are fan of Patricia Routledge like me you will love Hetty Wainthropp. This collection is brilliant. I have to give a huge thanks to Acorn Media for sending me this collection back in 2010. Hetty is getting older and after spending most of her life as a housewife and mother she has reached the age where she should draw a pension (or social security here in the United States.) However, she is only going to get a little through her husband so Hetty decides to get a job.

She takes at a local shop working in the check cashing/mail area. One day she watches a teen steal a charity jar and attempts to stop him. Later when she sees him working at the local grocery she is determined to turn him in. He follows her home and what forms is an unlikely friendship.

From that friendship a business forms when Geoffrey (the teen) follows a couple that Hetty is positive is up to no good. They are cashing an elderly neighbors pension checks but something seems off to Hetty and when she gets her little grey cells working she is determined to solve the mystery.

Solving what is going on with the couple and the older lady leads to an even bigger mystery. One that will have Geoffrey and Hetty risking their lives. Between the two of them and will a little help from Hetty’s husband Richard they are more determined than ever to figure out what is going on.

This is family friendly and not gory. So many shows today is full of violence. Hetty Wainthropp is refreshingly different. Not to mention fabulous!! Every character you meet will remind you of someone you know. You will be surprised at the guest stars that show up in this series as well. There are plenty of faces that you will have seen many times now.

Hetty is an unlikely detective and unlike many of the other detectives the police are never that upset to see her. In fact her and head detective have a somewhat friendship. In fact, he goes to her for help in one case. He offers her advice when he thinks she needs it and is quick to come to her rescue.
