Who Are Simba SC?

Simba SC is a team in the Tanzanian Premier League. Based in Dar es Salaam, they were founded in 1936 under the name “The Queens”. They then changed their name to Sunderland in the 1940s, before taking the Swahili name for lion in 1971. The club’s record is extensive. It has won 22 Tanzanian Premier League titles, five FA Cups, and has been a two-time finalist in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Their main rivalry is with another major Premier League Club, Young Africans FC, commonly known as Yanga. Based in the same district of Dar es Salaam, the two have heated derbies that attract all the local football fans. Unfortunately, these games have not been going the way of Simba SC recently, with Yanga winning six of the last derbies in a row. While Young Africans have also pipped them in the league, Simba had a winning streak between 2017 and 2021 that they are hoping to claw back.

To show just how much the Premier League in the country is becoming noticed, it is now attracting major sponsorship from global companies like Betway. Around 1,000 people have been trained on how to fuse activity into daily routines, and a further 128,000 more have benefited.

The scheme was launched by the International Olympic Committee and the World Health Organization, along with the global health organization PATH. By encouraging more people to partake in sport, they are hoping to cut down on noncommunicable diseases and attain one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In Tanzania, this has focused on integrating healthy activities into schools. Around 464 teachers across schools in the capital, Dar es Salaam, have used its toolkit, and it has reached 35,000 more students. The day now starts with a warm-up and movements, such as dance.

Added to this have been the inclusion of sports clubs. Football is not the only hot spot either, with taekwondo and netball also proving popular. 
The Ministry of Health, Education, and Sport has also assisted in this. They have facilitated its introduction into health centres and are promoting regular physical activity.

Economic Benefits

As well as the health benefits of teams like Simba SC and their inspiration, there are also economic benefits. Sport investment firm Jay Rutty recently placed money into the club. This includes an annual payout of TZS 5.6 billion with a 10% increase each year. All of this means more staff and players, reducing unemployment and bringing more revenue.

This popularity has also increased the amount spent on sports betting, which is booming. It makes up 63% of all gambling activity in the country. Of this, football is understandably the most popular, with teams like Simba SC leading the charge. Most betting is placed on football. Revenue each year from sports betting is around $7.37m with a growth rate of 9.02%. It should hit $11.34m by 2030.

The numbers taking part in betting are also rather high. It is estimated that 56% of the population will bet regularly by the end of the year, being 39.5 million players. A lot of this also takes place online, as Tanzania has recently experienced a growth in smartphone usage and improved connectivity.

Thus, football is hugely popular in Tanzania and has a positive impact. Sport in general provides more opportunities. Simba SC are inspiring people to be active, and this can cut down on diseases like diabetes and heart conditions. Not only that, the revenue from betting is taxable revenue having a positive impact. By pushing further ahead and with more investment, Tanzania could produce global stars in football and beyond.
