How to Choose the Perfect Fireplace Tile

Oct 19, 2023 | Rita

How to Choose the Perfect Fireplace Tile

When choosing tile for a fireplace, durability is a major consideration. You want tiles that can withstand heat and moisture while looking their best.

Glazed porcelain is a great choice for fireplace tile ideas, as it can withstand the high temperatures that typically occur around a fireplace. It’s also available in many styles, such as herringbone and chevron.

Marble

Tile can add an element of elegance and sophistication to any fireplace design. It’s an ideal choice for creating a sleek, modern look that will be the focal point of your space. Marble tiles offer a range of beautiful neutral colors and patterns and have stunning veins that can transform your fireplace into a natural work of art.

Large-scale marble field tile works well in contemporary walk-in showers and outdoor patios, but it can also create a striking finish on your fireplace walls. You can even use herringbone, chevron, or hexagon pattern tile to add texture and dimension to your fireplace design.

Cement and ceramic tiles are another good option for your fireplace as they provide heat resistance and come in various color and pattern options to suit your style. Consider a textured cement tile, offering a unique wave-like pattern that complements traditional and rustic spaces. You can even mix and match tile types to create a one-of-a-kind finish for your fireplace.

Subway

The type of tile you select for your fireplace can say a lot about your home’s overall aesthetic and style. For example, if your craftsman home emphasizes organic elements, a natural stone tile can enhance the design and bring warmth to the hearth. Similarly, a simpler tile with less pattern can create a sleek and minimal effect if your home is more contemporary.

Regardless of your style, patterned tiles can add a bold factor that draws attention to your fireplace and makes it stand out as a focal point. There are many patterned options, from classic herringbone patterns to modern chevrons. You can even mix and match different types of tile to create a one-of-a-kind fireplace look.

The most important consideration when selecting tile for your fireplace is durability. Since the area around a fireplace will be subject to high heat and extreme humidity, your chosen tile should be rated for these conditions. A popular choice is ceramic tile, which has strong moisture resistance and can withstand the high temperatures generated by a log fire or gas stove.

Brick

Tile is a popular choice for fireplaces because it’s heat-resistant and works well with most decor. But what kind of tiles should you choose? Look for ones that complement your home’s color palette and work with your style.

For example, if your home has warm browns and beiges, consider choosing a neutral or organic-colored tile for your fireplace. Alternatively, if you want your fireplace to be the focal point in your living room, a bold-colored tile can be an eye-catching accent.

Another option is brick-patterned tile. These tiles exude warmth and character that will instantly transform any room. Choose a red brick-like finish for a traditional feel, or try a painted white tile for a more contemporary look.

You can also mix shapes and patterns to create a one-of-a-kind design. For example, a herringbone tile pattern can add a touch of flair that will grab attention and spark conversation. Just make sure you choose glazed porcelain tiles, which are more durable than unglazed and can withstand high heat. This will ensure that your tiles can withstand the intense heat of a fireplace.

Glass

The right tile can elevate a fireplace into an elegant focal point. There are endless possibilities, from design trends like herringbone patterns to unique shapes and even geometric patterns. Just be sure to choose tiles that meet the required heat ratings and are made of a non-combustible material.

Porcelain tile is a durable option that can stand up to the high temperatures that fireplaces generate. It’s also available in various colors, styles, and finishes to match any decor.

Stone tile is another excellent choice for a fireplace surround or hearth. Granite, slate, marble, onyx, and travertine tile add a touch of warmth to any space while complementing traditional or rustic decor.

A brick-look tile is a classic option that can refresh the fireplace surround or hearth with a timeless look. This style is also easy to maintain and can be framed with wood trim to make it more visually appealing. Some brick-look tiles are glazed to resist moisture and are easy to wipe clean.

Ceramic

If you’re looking to change up the look of your fireplace for a fresh update, there are many tile options. Choosing a design that matches your home’s aesthetic and overall style can make the space feel more cohesive.

For example, if your house is decorated with warm browns and beiges, you might opt for tiles that match those colors for a natural look. Similarly, if you have a more modern aesthetic, selecting flat tiles that are simple and clean may be the way to go.

Patterned tiles can also be a great choice for a fireplace. They add visual interest and evoke a sense of timelessness and tradition. For example, a herringbone tile pattern resembles the skeleton of a herringfish, creating a unique and eye-catching design that can be used for a rustic or country-themed room.

If you’re going with a flat, two-dimensional tile, adding wood trim can help frame your new design. This creates a clean line that’s easy to maintain and can help protect your new fireplace surround.

I liked this post, but I have never lived anywhere there was a fireplace. I had some friends that had them, and I really didn’t like the smoke smell.
