How To Elevate Your Garden Space And Add Depth

Feb 12, 2026 | Rita

Every garden should get the care and attention that its homeowners put into the interior parts of the property.

It’s therefore important that you always see your garden space as an extension of your indoor space. Elevating a garden space and adding depth involves a number of steps. From layered planting to adding structural elements, there are plenty of ways it can be achieved.

If you’re looking to elevate your garden space and add depth, then here are some useful tips to make that happen successfully.

1. Create vertical interest

Vertical interest is always something that can transform the outdoor space for the better because not everyone thinks to design upwards.

With vertical planting like pergolas and trellises, these are all great for climbing plants and roses. Living walls are also great for adding vertical interest, so explore wall-mounted pots, hanging baskets, and more.

Don’t forget about the trees and shrubs you could add to the space to add some height to the garden, especially if it’s at a lower level in parts.

2. Design for depth and dimension

Designing for depth and dimension are two important design aspects to drive forward with. That’s why it’s important to explore layered planting. Arranging your plants in tiers, it creates that three-dimensional look.

When requiring a bit of dimension in the space, opt for diagonal paths. Instead of using straight, linear paths, use curved or diagonal pathways instead. It helps force the eye to move from side to side rather than just up and down.

Color psychology is important to pay attention to, so place light-colored plants and flowers at the front, with darker ones towards the back. This makes the far end of the garden feel more distant.

A focal point is a good addition to the space, too, to draw the eye, from a large, striking plant to a dynamic water feature.

3. Structural upgrades

Structural upgrades are often required for the benefit of updating the space. For example, raised beds are great for adding height and structure, while also providing better drainage.

Think about offering different textures, especially if you’re looking to reduce some of the lawn space. You can choose between bark and gravel, or more decorative materials where preferred.

Add in weatherproof mirrors to fences or walls to help reflect light and the foliage within the space. Sunken seating is good to add in certain areas to create zones within the space. Don’t forget the outdoor kitchen and dining areas, too.

4. Strategic lighting

The use of lighting types is important, whether you’re using dramatic uplighting on trees to low level lights to highlight pathways and interesting plants that wouldn’t otherwise be seen.

Fairy lights, as simple as they are, are highly effective when it comes to creating a whimsical and magical appearance in the garden.

5. Small garden tips

A few small garden tips are useful to know. Try to go big with pots, but keep the number of pots minimal. This helps create a less of a cluttered appearance to the garden.

Blurring boundaries is good to help hide fences and walls, making it not so clear where your garden ends.

With these tips, you can elevate and add depth to your garden, regardless of the potential space available.
