Everyone knows that visiting the dentist on a regular basis is one of the best ways to maintain good oral health. Sadly, a lot of people neglect to see their dentist for a variety of reasons. Some people are afraid of the dentist, others find it too expensive, and some just neglect how important it is to get regular dental checkups.
As such, it’s important to find more ways to convince yourself to visit your dentist on a regular basis. One of the best ways to do this is to actually find a dentist that you really like. Many dentists these days are trained to help their patients feel welcome and respected, creating a smooth and enjoyable experience for them. But finding the perfect dentist can be difficult, so we’re going to share a couple of tips to help you do just that.
Start with recommendations and go from there
To begin, ask your friends and family members for dentist recommendations. If any of them are really happy with their dentist, then it’s a good sign and you should write those dental offices down (or the dentist’s name) so you can do a bit more research later on. You can also ask colleagues for suggestions, or even your family doctor. Everyone has a dentist, so this is a great place to start as opposed to looking around in your local area.
Look online for local dental offices
Convenience is usually a huge consideration when it comes to picking a dentist. Nobody wants to travel over an hour to reach their dentist and then an hour back, so it’s usually a good idea to look for local dental offices. A great way to do this is by looking on Google. Simply search for a local dental professional and you’ll usually get a bunch of suggestions. Unfortunately, some people might live in an area without nearby dental offices.
If you’re using Google, then this is also a good time to look at their ratings. Almost every dental office that you can find on Google will have some kind of rating attached to them. There will also be reviews and photographs of the area. If the dental practice is rated low, then you can safely skip them as they’re probably not worth your time. However, if you find any that are rated four or five stars, then add their name to your list of candidates.
Go through your list carefully and check for these things
Now that you’ve put together a list of suggestions from both Google and your friends and family members, it’s time to go through them one by one. Work your way through the list and look for these things in particular:
- Do they have the right qualifications and experience? A good dental practice should have dentists that are well-trained and qualified for the job.
- Do they have various specializations? Some dental practices have dentists that specialize in various different things. This can include orthodontics, periodontics, and even cosmetic dentistry. The more well-equipped a dental practice is, the more services it can offer you.
- Do they have a modern dental practice? You can often judge this from photographs alone. If their individual offices look clean and modern, then you can safely assume that they’re using the latest techniques both for effective dentistry and cleanliness.
- Do they have good reviews? As mentioned before, you can safely ignore any dental practice that has a low star rating. But you should also look at reviews to see what people say. This can give you hints to how the staff is, how the dentists are, and also what the general atmosphere is like.
- Are they on your insurance coverage? If you have medical insurance then it’s worth checking if the dentist you’re checking can accept your insurance plan. If you don’t have dental insurance, then you may want to ask about potential options and finance plans.
This short checklist should give you a better understanding of what’s available in your local area. Follow the suggestions from your friends and family members, and consider the options you found when you were searching through Google.
The next step would be to visit the dental practice to see what it’s like for yourself. Remember that reviews aren’t everything and things could have changed, making the practice entirely different. It’s best to get first-hand experience by seeking a consultation with the dental practices that you’re thinking of. This will give you a much better idea and help you gauge whether or not it’s the right dentist for you.

I fear the dentist more than anything! So many bad experiences as a child. One even slapped me across my face. I found one though after years of searching, and I love him. he became a dentist because he also feared them.
