It’s interesting, and often quite sad, to see how people feel about themselves and their bodies. We all object to ourselves in various ways, and sometimes that can come from childhood or the standards we think have been foisted upon us. It’s why we find it generally worthwhile to see diverse body representations in fashionable advertisements, because it shows that being a normal person is actually the standard, not a perfect idealization of beauty. But then again, how should marketers try to encourage our sense of wanting to purchase their products without something to aspire to? It’s a nasty question that goes around in circles, so it’s no wonder people are confused.
What if we cut through that? Having a healthier relationship to your weight and physical stature doesn’t have to feel like a lifelong game you have to constantly battle with. Help is there, you can absolutely get over any compulsions you have, and you deserve all of that and more.
But how might you get started? Well, if the issue is deeper than a blog can give you, we’d certainly recommend speaking to a mental health or fitness professional to give you the new perspective you need.
With the following advice, we hope you can find a worthwhile outcome:
Celebrate What Your Body Can Do, Not What It Isn’t
It’s important to remember that no matter what you think of your body, it’s here for you, breathing steadily, your heart is pumping blood through your system, and countless other processes are working together to keep you here. These daily beautiful truths often go unnoticed while we fixate on perceived flaws.
But the truth is you need to celebrate what your body is, not what you think it should be. If you’ve had children, that’s a miracle. If you’re a little overweight, that doesn’t matter in the slightest, you can work on it as you deem fit or just accept yourself depending on what your doctor recommends. Celebrate any capabilities you have and don’t dismiss yourself for any you don’t. This helps you avoid dismissals.
Practical Radical Self-Acceptance
Even if you want to improve your fitness or general appearance, it’s much better to do that from a place of feeling enough already than feeling like you’re lacing something. For this reason it’s worth practicing radical self-acceptance, that you are enough now, and no matter what healthy habit you put in place, it’s a bonus. This also means that if you choose to make a difference, such as with a new weight loss solution, you won’t be doing so for the wrong reasons. This can help you avoid feeling desperate and instead focus on abundance. That’s not always easy, but it’s certainly a healthy idea to mull over compared to constantly comparing yourself to before.
Work On Good Habits & Let Them Carry You
What if you didn’t care what your body looked like, but just focused on your habits each day? Maybe you stick to eating three healthy meals a day, and having one healthy snack. Maybe you want to drink less. Just focus on that, and your weight will slowly and gently take care of itself. It will also help you avoid thinking of numbers too much as a barrier to real change.
