Communication is important for all relationships in life, especially those that are romantic partnerships. Without communication, it can be very easy for any relationship to fall apart. With that being said, it’s important to focus more on how to improve communication when it’s lacking.
With the loss of trust, poor communication and a lack of respect being three of the main influences in a failed relationship, it’s clear communication matters.
Be willing to put in the work
In order for the relationship to improve, it’s necessary to put in the work as a result. This can be done, in part, by communicating more from day to day. Whether it’s a new relationship or one that’s been growing for the past year or two, communication will always be important in a relationship.
Putting in the work is necessary and that means picking up the phone or making communication first.
Make time for socializing
Socializing is important because it’s healthy for any relationship to exist beyond just the two people involved.
Make sure to go out alone and as a couple. This is important because otherwise, it can cause a reliance on that other person to always be available when socialization is needed.
With regular occasions where both partners are having their own social life, is going to give something for both to talk about when they’re back together.
Set boundaries where needed
Boundaries are important to improve communication, especially for those who may have open relationships. Are party lines to talk appropriate for the relationship? Can the partner flirt with others if there’s non-exclusivity to the relationship?
Everyone has their own boundaries and these can also differ when it comes to a relationship. Think about what the boundaries are and how these are set going forward. Communicate these between one another so that both are on the same page.
Cut out toxic relationships
Toxic relationships exist in everyone’s life and can often go undetected for a long time. Unless, it’s something that a person has become more aware of, the red flags of a toxic relationship can continue to impact a relationship until much damage has been done to the individuals involved.
With that being said, try to be more aware of what toxic relationships exist in life, both personal and through friends or families. By cutting them out now, it’s going to help avoid making more of them in the future.
Don’t make assumptions
When in a relationship, it’s very easy to make assumptions about what one partner believes of the other. From text messages to phone calls and in-person conversations. Never assume when a conversation isn’t quite fully formed as this can often lead to the wrong decisions being made.
Always ask or query something that the other partner says and vice versa. It’ll help the relationship greatly when assumptions aren’t made.
Communication is essential so make sure that more of it happens in the relationship. Where it’s lacking, find ways to introduce it more to help solidify the relationship further.
I live in a small Georgia town that you most likely have never heard of and I LOVE it! My house is more than full as I am a single mother of four & caregiver to my aging mother and uncle. Lover of all things Outlander. Goes to the beat of her own drum woman.
