How To Make Your House A Home: Two Tips!

Feb 09, 2016 | Rita

If you’ve just moved into a new house, you probably want to know how to make it feel like home. Here are two top tips that can turn any place into a family home:

Add A Personal Touch Here And There

When you move into a new house, it feels bare. You walk through the front door, and you’re met with an eery silence and empty rooms. Sometimes, you’re lucky enough to have some remnants of the past owners of the house. A sofa that they couldn’t be bothered to take with them. Or an old toaster, thanks for that, I really wanted an old toaster. Either way, it’s not likely that your house is going to feel like a home at that moment.

In fact, it won’t be until you’ve unpacked all the moving boxes that things start to feel a little different. You’ve filled up some of the empty rooms, and it’s not as bare anymore. The place immediately feels more cosy. But, filling your house with items and furniture is only going to do so much. Sure, the house won’t feel as empty as it did when you first stepped through the front door. Back then, it didn’t even feel like a house; it was just an empty building. Now that everything is set up inside, it feels like a house, but not a home. There’s still work to be done if you want a proper homey feel to your house.

You might think there’s some big secret to it. You may be expecting some huge reveal where I tell you something that only a select few people know about. But, I’m not. Making your house a home can be extremely simple. All you need is to add a personal touch here and there. By this I mean, add things to your house that remind you of your family. Place pictures on the walls, so you are surrounded by your family at all times. One idea is to create a collage of some special family moments. You can get big picture frames that are perfect for this sort of thing. Gather together a load of family photos and pick out some of the best ones. Choose ones that make you laugh, smile, and cry. In fact, it’s a brilliant idea to do this as a family. It’s a great chance for some family bonding while also making your house feel like home.

Of course, it’s important to note that you shouldn’t go overboard with the family photos. Having every wall plastered with pictures can be a little overwhelming. Instead of making your house feel like home, it can make it feel a bit weird and creepy. Like you’ve just stepped into the home of someone that’s overly obsessed with your family. A nice collage in the living room and maybe a few pictures hanging up in the hall will go a long way. You don’t need much, just enough to make your house feel more comforting.

Similarly, it doesn’t just have to be family photos. Think about any other stuff that’s special to your family. Perhaps you have some souvenirs from a holiday? If they’re special to you, have them on display in your house. Or, you might have an ornament that you had throughout your stay in your old home. Bring it with you to your new one and put it where it was before. That’s another point try and make your new home look like your old one. Organize things in a similar way, and bring stuff with you from your old house.
By adding a personal touch to your house, you make it feel more like yours. It no longer feels barren and empty. Instead, it’s full of stuff that’s special to your family.

Make It A Pest-Free Zone

The thing about a family home is that it belongs to you and your family. Therefore, you want to keep unwanted visitors at bay. No, I’m not talking about that annoying neighbor that always tries to invite them round. I’m talking about pests. These are animals that find a way to your home when you don’t want them to be there. Typically, most house can end up getting unwanted visits by pests during the year. The key is finding ways to keep them at bay, and make your house more welcoming for your family. After all, no one feels comfortable living in a home that’s pest-ridden.

So, how can you make your house a pest-free zone and live a much more comfortable life? Well, it depends on what type of pest you’re dealing with. For me, I classify pests into two groups; rodents and insects. A lot of the time, mice, rats or squirrels can get into your home. Usually, they’re found in the attic. Sometimes it’s a mystery how they got up there, other times there’s a gaping hole in your roof inviting them in. To deal with your rodent problem, you can buy things to keep them at bay. There are lots of sprays on the market that are designed to ward off mice and rats. Simply spray it in the attic, and they shouldn’t be coming round again soon. Similarly, there are things you can plug into a socket, and they emit a high-frequency sound. This scares rodents away.

For your insect problem, you’re likely to be dealing with termites. These little insects can be the bane of your life. They’ll ruin anything wooden in your house. The best cause of action for these is to get a pest control expert round. They’ll have the tools to be able to deal with your termite situation

By ridding your home from pests, you make it much more comfortable. It starts to feel more like a home; somewhere you want to be in. Rather than a building that’s full of pests and makes you uncomfortable!

Follow these two tips and your family will have a lovely home to live in. Life at home is very important if you want a happy family!

I completely agree with the family photos. We have a two story home and on the wall as you come downstairs we have a family picture hung. Visitors may not always see it but we see it everyday as we come downstairs.
