How To Protect Your Home From Storm Damage

Dec 09, 2022 | Rita

Some people use storms as a reason to stay inside and take it easy. But storms often get worse and cause damage, power outages, and other terrible things. Storms also cause a lot of damage to buildings, which can cost people and businesses a lot of money. No matter what kind of natural disasters happen in your area – snowstorms, floods, thunderstorms, tornadoes, or something else – it’s important to stay safe and know what to do to protect your home from storm damage. Read on to find out more.

Inspect Fences And Sheds

During a storm, it’s easy for fences to come loose, and strong winds and rain can destroy sheds. To keep a fence strong, reinforce it. If you can, take out a few wood planks from your shed to let the wind through without letting it be blown apart.

If a storm rips up your garden and blows sheds and fences into the yards of your neighbors, causing damage, your policy isn’t likely to pay out. This is because some fences aren’t allowed on such insurance policies because they aren’t strong enough, so make sure you’ve taken care to strengthen it and inform your insurer about that too.

Replace Missing Shingles

If there are any missing shingles on your roof, a storm can cause a lot of damage. Firstly, rainwater can more easily get inside your home, especially when it’s windy. Next, that same wind can get beneath the missing tile and damage those around it or even cause more to fall away. Broken tiles are also a problem for similar reasons.

If you want to protect your property from storm damage, you’ll need to inspect your roof and replace any damaged or missing shingles as soon as possible. The best way to go about this to ensure it’s done in a safe and professional manner is to contact experts, such as Primo Roofing Company.

Remove Large Tree Branches

Breaking branches from trees during a storm can cause damage to your home’s siding, as well as other buildings, vehicles, and electricity lines in the area.

Check the trees in your yard at least once a month and remove any sagging branches. If you have any old trees on your property that are leaning, crooked, or whose roots are exposed as a result of storm damage or erosion, you may want to have them removed by a professional service. Check the branches of any trees on your property that are close to electricity wires, and contact the electricity company if you suspect that they could fall on a power line during a storm.

Secure The House

Close and lock all of your home’s doors and windows. If a window is accidentally left open or unlocked, gusts of wind could come in and damage your belongings or even let debris fly in.

Most alarms won’t work if the power goes out, so this keeps you safe if someone is waiting for an opportunity to break into a home during a storm, as well as protecting your property from harm.
