How to Stay Sane When Money is Tight

Life often comes with its stresses. As much as we might like things to go to plan at all times, that isn’t always the case. Things can happen that throw us off course and, as a result, bring a lot of negativity into our lives. At the same time, we may also find that this can cost us a lot of money. This can cause a bit of a vicious cycle! We all know that having money troubles or finding yourself a bit short can feel stressful. So here, you’ll often want to make sure that you can bring in different ways to feel like you’re able to stay sane even when things are a little tight. If you know that you’d like to make some small changes to your financial life right now, you’ve come to the right place. These next five tips could be just what you’re looking for!

1. Get Super Clear on Where You’re At

To begin with, you’ll need to make sure that you have a clear view of your financial situation. When you’re fully aware of what’s going on, you can then take the right action to change things. But in order to do that, you need to be super clear on what’s happened to cause things to be tight.

2. Find the Right Advice for You

From here, you can then work out what your next best steps are. You’re going to want to read up on key advice from financial experts, like Alex Kleyner, on whatever topic your issue relates to. It might be dealing with debt or budgeting better. But educating yourself on what to do next will help you to feel more in control.

3. Find Some Breathing Room

The next thing to do is to try and find some breathing room. Are there expenses you can cut? Can you switch bills to something cheaper? Is there a way to make extra cash? Giving yourself a bit of breathing room as soon as possible is a great way to help you feel less stressed.

4. Distract Yourself

At this point, you’re then going to want to distract yourself! Once you’ve taken action, you need to try and calm your mind down. What better way is there to do that than to have some fun for free? Going out on a free date with your significant other or having friends over could be just what you need right now!

5. Give Yourself Some Grace!

Finally, you’re also going to want to make sure that you’re being kind to yourself throughout this whole process. It’s not always your fault that you have ended up in this situation – and blaming yourself isn’t going to make things any better. Ultimately, we all have a choice in how we react to situations. If you’re going to stress over it, it might feel a million times worse than it actually is! When instead, you can give yourself some grace and try to minimize the problem (while taking action to try and make things better!). This is going to help you feel a lot better about it all.

I’d also say, check your local library services! Not only do many have tons of often unexpected freebies (museum passes! telescopes, laptops, and wi-fi hotspots you can borrow!), they often have tax preparation and financial advisers this time of year.
