Illusion by: Frank Peretti {Giveaway}

Apr 24, 2012 | Rita

Title: Illusion Author: Frank Peretti Publisher: Howard Books ISBN: 978-1-4391-9267-2 Genre: Christian Fiction SRP: $26.99

Dane and Mandy, a popular magic act for forty years, are tragically separated by a car wreck that claims Mandy’s life—or so everyone thinks. Even as Dane mourns and tries to rebuild his life without her, Mandy, supposedly dead, awakes in the present as the nineteen-year-old she was in 1970. Distraught and disoriented in what to her is the future, she is confined to a mental ward until she discovers a magical ability to pass invisibly through time and space to escape. Alone in a strange world, she uses her mysterious powers to eke out a living, performing magic on the streets and in a quaint coffee shop.

Hoping to discover an exciting new talent, Dane ventures into the coffee shop and is transfixed by the magic he sees, illusions that even he, a seasoned professional, cannot explain. But more than anything, he is emotionally devastated by this teenager who has never met him, doesn’t know him, is certainly not in love with him, but is in every respect identical to the young beauty he first met and married some forty years earlier.

They begin a furtive relationship as mentor and protégée, but even as Dane tries to sort out who she really is and she tries to understand why she is drawn to him, they are watched by secretive interests who not only possess the answers to Mandy’s powers and misplacement in time but also the roguish ability to decide what will become of her.

Frank Peretti has crafted a rich, rewarding story of love and life, loss and restoration, full of twists and mystery. Exceptionally well written, Illusion will soon prove another Peretti classic.

Read an excerpt

Illusion is the story of Dane and Mandy, a popular magic act, husband and wife team,who are tragically separated by a car accident that claims Mandy’s life. As Dane mourns the loss of his wife and their 40 year partnership, he tries to continue on with life by moving to their dream retirement ranch in Idaho, near where Mandy grew up.

Mandy, who has died, suddenly wakes up in the present, in the body of the 19 year old she was in 1970. Waking up this way, disoriented and confused, she is confined to a mental institution, until she discovers a miraculous, magical ability, which allows her to walk invisibly through time and space. Confused and alone in the modern age, she escapes to the only place she knows, home. Unable to find any hint of her family ranch, and no sign of her beloved father, she attempts to make a living as a street magician, where she “meets” Dane again.

Dane feeling a strong connection to this amateur street performer, reaches out to her and gives her a few tips to put her on the right direction. Feeling an instant connection to this young woman who is so much like his wife, Mandy, Dane is confused. Taking his advice to heart, Mandy or Eloise, as she is calling herself now, works out some unexplainable illusions and begins working in a local coffee shop.

This was an interesting and tragic love story with a truly unique twist.  It is a beautifully written love story that is full of twists. It was so good that I gave my copy to my aunt who has already read it twice!
