Let’s face it; nobody wants to be stuck with the standard light fixtures that come with a new home, or the less-than-appealing antiques found in some older homes. Lighting fixtures are now available in countless styles and designs, making it easy to bring the atmosphere of your home into the 21st century. Whether the vision of your dream home embodies timeless design or trendy eclecticism, the perfect lighting fixtures are out there. You just have to be willing to take a look.
Replacing the Antiques is Really Okay
A lot of people cling to outdated lighting fixtures for sentimental reasons and think because it worked for grandma, it will still work today. Making the decision to change out the lighting in your home can be tricky, but it’s essential to making the space your own. You don’t even have to physically get rid of your outdated pieces (unless you have this clutter).
Turn that ugly sconce or chandelier into something modern and functional while still keeping the essence of the piece in the family. If you’re not quite ready to say goodbye, you could always put your heirlooms into storage. This way you’ll have a peace of mind that they’re safe and available should a retro-inclined relative want to use them.
Take Some Time to Find Your Style
If you’ve decided to ditch or upgrade the outdated lighting in your home, you’re already off to a great start. Take some time to brainstorm what kinds of design elements appeal to you naturally. Then envision the details you’d like each room to include so you can narrow down the search for the perfect lighting fixture that complements your vision even thinking through possible brand preferences that offer exclusive lamp designs, or embedded lighting fixtures where you’re trying to highlight focal points.
Arm yourself with color swatches and different material textures, then pay a visit to each room of your home, and at different times of day to get an idea of how much light you’ll need to supplement. Natural light makes a huge difference, and you want to be sure the room feels comfortable and appealing regardless the time of day.
For example, you wouldn’t want to pick a design scheme for the office that only included dark colors and small amounts of light; no one would ever get any work done. On the same note, you probably wouldn’t want a completely white and constantly bright family room, either—it’s hard to create an intimate setting with direct lights and colors all around.
When it Comes to Modern Lighting, The Sky is the Limit
Modern lighting is an incredibly diverse brand. There are so many colors, styles, and designs when it comes to lighting fixtures that it would be difficult not to find something you absolutely love — from abstract to eclectic — for every single space in your home. Maybe you want to spruce up the kitchen and make it more inviting.
Adding linear pendant lighting over the peninsula or island will create a well-lit space for meal prep or open up the room for conversation. Pendant lighting design has come a long way in that there are so many options besides a bulb hanging at the end of a rod. For a home office, task lighting on the desk (most commonly in the form of a desk lamp or track lighting) could come in handy when you need an extra boost of productivity. Or dimmable lighting in the entire space could make for a cozy spot to read your favorite book in the evening.
It’s Never Too Late for an Update
Don’t get stuck thinking about the work required to replace your old, outdated lighting fixtures. Instead focus on how much fun it would be to bring new life (and light) into just one room of your home. The road to modern lighting won’t be without bumps, but it could invigorate you just enough to continue throughout the rest of your house until every single room encapsulates your unique vision. How many people walk through their homes and absolutely love every single thing about it? Changing out lighting fixtures is a relatively easy place to start. Begin planning today and your home will be one step closer to a fresh new look.

My house tends to look dark in the living room because the front of the house gets no sunlight. I need to update my living room lights to be more bright with energy efficient lighting. I would love to get more modern lights.

I never think of changing up the lighting because I rent. I do have my own lamps but they’re blah. I really like the pendant lighting, with it getting dark so early thus is the perfect time to make some non-permanent changes (in case I move ) Thanks for the design inspiration.
