Journey through Ruth: Love at First Sight

Jan 13, 2014 | Rita

If the saying Love at First Sight never really held true for you then perhaps chapter 2 of the Book of Ruth will show you it exists. Ruth goes to glean the left over grain in the fields. She just happens to glean in the field of Boaz who is related to Naomi through her late husband.

Boaz immediately sees Ruth and is struck by her. SO much so that he orders his men to not touch her, to leave behind some grain for her and he gives her pretty much free reign in the field. That is a big deal. First because she is a woman and in the day women weren’t highly thought of. But mostly because she was an immigrant there. She was a Moabite and not look well upon by the Jewish people.

Ruth has lunch with Boaz and she stays with his young women working in the field so that she is not assaulted by any men in another field. People notice too! For Boaz he simply cannot explain why he has shown his favor to Ruth. He tells himself and others that it is because of Naomi but in truth it is something more.

Boaz fell in love with Ruth the moment he saw her and she with him. Can you imagine that kind of love? I fell in love with Edgar the first moment I saw him and he said he did as well. I don’t know that I would have had the strength that Ruth had. Naomi and she ate whatever grain that she gathered each day. If she came home with nothing, then there was nothing to eat.

Do you think you could have survived all of that?

I am a pretty adaptable person and go along with the flow. With God on my side I know I could get through anything and could have if I was Ruth too.

I do believe that with God by my side I can survive/get through the toughest of times. Even if I have doubts from time to time. I am human and that is a part of my imperfection.

I think that when we are in those types of situations, we do what we have to do to survive. I think we rely on God for our strength. With Gods strength and guidance we can take on anything.

I do think I would have survived. I am not one to give up. I hope I never have to find out though.
