Keeping Food Warm

Apr 12, 2014 | Rita

Ever have those days when you are cooking something and you need to keep things warm as you go? For example when I was making the pancakes I wanted all of them to stay warm as I went. I didn’t want to have to heat up anything again. So  realized that there was a very easy way to accomplish all of that……..my oven! I know I am sure that many of you already thought about and use this method. I am a self taught cook and to be honest until a few years ago this just didn’t cross my mind.

I preheat my oven to 350 degrees and then I  place my oven safe covered casserole dish inside it. I don’t know how long it takes for your over to heat up but it takes mine about 10 minutes to reach 350 degrees. I could wait for the oven to preheat but I just don’t. I leave the dish in the oven for about 30 minutes total and then take it out. As I cook whatever it is is I place the finished product into the casserole dish and keep it covered.

Now in order to keep the stem from making everything become all wet and mushy I place a paper towel between the dish and the cover. Since the dish is already hot it takes it a while for it to cool down and I am adding in the hot food as I cook it so everything is staying nice and warm and will be ready to serve when I am.

This is definitely a handy hint. When I make pancakes I generally put them between two plates sometimes this does the trick and keeps them warm.

Very useful tip. I can’t tell you how many meals I’ve served where the food was “unevenly” heated because I didn’t have a good solution for this.

Thank you for the tips. I have boys that work at night and when they get home, they are starving. I appreciate these tips and so do they.

Great idea- much better than just putting food on a plate in the oven!

Hubby said to remind everyone to make sure the container gets taken out of the oven when you’re done so you don’t forget it and preheat the oven with the dish still in there.
