Let’s Talk Nails

Oct 08, 2019 | Rita

This was another ALG post that I moved over here. It is just one of the beauty ones I have. I don’t know about y’all but it was only just a few short years ago (like eight) when I let my nails grow out. I was a bitter I’m embarrassed to say. It was a nervous habit that I picked up in my early years and it stuck with me.  That meant that I never had long pretty nails unless I went and had fake nails put on.

I did that a time or two and let me tell you that I have no idea how all of you that do wear those do it. I am going to be beyond frank and give you a little TMI but I had the hardest time in the bathroom when I would wear those. However, I still loved to paint my nails.

Growing up I always wore light or pale shades. Mostly because red wasn’t allowed (“This ain’t the red light district ” my father would say) and I was always afraid something wouldn’t look nice. More importantly that someone else wouldn’t like how it looked. Later after I married I stuck with colors that he liked. Oh, longed to try green or neon yellow but knew it wasn’t allowed. The paler colors were nice and looked sophisticated but I yearned for something trendy and new. One color I always wanted to try but wasn’t sure I could ever pull it off o matter what was black.

Then a few days ago I threw caution to wind and painted those puppies black. I have to say that I love them! I feel a little like a rebel and I can’t tell you when I have felt so happy over something so minor. I am planning on doing them black from to time and getting myself an awesome ring or two to wear with them.

While I realize that painting your nails a nails is not that big of a deal, for someone who has been controlled for so long it is very freeing. I felt like I was taking back a part of myself. The part that would have painted them black regardless of what my father thought when I got old enough. He never wanted me to dye my hair and the first time I did it he realized it was time to let me fly. His words not mine.

Then I went and hitched my post to an unworthy man. One that I know my father would have punched several times over the years.  However, I a firm believer in:

That which does not kill us, makes us stronger.

That means I am getting stronger and stronger every single day.

I agree. I wasn’t sure about them but after I did it I was thrilled.

I love painting my nails different colors. For me, it’s an important part of my self expression. It’s nice to see that you are able to branch out a little!

I too, cannot wear fake nails to save my life. They bother the crap out of me. I also like black polish with a glitter glitter polish over top.

I’m right there with you on the fake nails. There are the worst for me at least. I haven’t tried black with glitter on top. I will have to give it a go.

I only feel comfortable wearing darker colors on my nails. I gave up hope years ago to have perfect nails unless I went for weekly manicures which isn’t in the budget.

I know what you mean. I would love to get weekly manicures but I have to drive too far.

I still don’t do my fingernails, but my one sort of selfish thing is to have my toenails done. No, painting your nails does not sound silly to me…having my toes done is a big deal to me

Try that green! You will be suprised at how much you like it. Darker shades are good start with, then you can go more kelly green. Green was the first color i went out on a limb with and now i will wear anything. I think it had to do with my light pink only household growing up, too. 🙂 oh, the south!

I’ve never tried painting my nails black – I usually stick to nude. But black does look cool.

I generally like lots of color on my nails but I have to admit your black nails look great!

I don’t paint my nails very often, but when I do I usually go with pale shades. My sister usually paints hers every week & she does random colors, designs, etc. It just depends on what kind of mood she’s in.

I typically wear my nails with nude colors because I believe they look the most professional; however, i think other colors are nice and it is my choice to wear the more subtle colors. i commend you for trying new colors after having grown up in a situation where you could not, as it demonstrates you pushing past the barriers of your childhood.

I love fake nails but hate how my nails feel and are literally horribly unhealthy after they are gone!
