Life Lately: August’s Lazy Days

Life Lately: August’s Lazy Days

There’s something about August that makes time feel like it’s walking through molasses—slow, sticky, and a little reluctant to move. The rush of June and the firecracker energy of July have faded, and now we’re left with the golden lull of late summer. The kind where the days stretch long, cicadas sing like it’s their full-time job, and everything moves just a beat slower. Life lately? It’s been one part dreamy, one part sweaty, and fully flavored with nostalgia.

When the World Slows Down

In a world that loves hustle, August dares to whisper, “Rest.” The mornings feel a little heavier with dew, and the evenings arrive sooner than they should, casting everything in that warm, burnt-orange glow. It’s the month of porch swings and second helpings, of chasing shade and savoring slow. Even errands feel different in August—there’s no hurry to them, just a gentle meander through what needs doing.

Maybe it’s the heat or the collective awareness that the back-to-school buzz is coming. But this pause, this sweet August limbo, is a gift if we’re willing to receive it.

Backyard Moments and Bare Feet

Lately, I’ve been savoring the simplest things. Peach juice dripping off my chin. The hum of the fan in the quiet house. Leftover grilled corn turned into something wonderful the next day. Evening walks with no destination—just a loop around the block with the dog, both of us trying to pretend it’s not 87 degrees at 7:30 p.m.

The kids are in that summer haze where bedtimes slide and popsicles are considered a valid snack at any hour. And honestly? I’m not rushing to change that just yet. These lazy rhythms—sweaty, sweet, and slow—are what August does best.

The Beauty in the Linger

There’s also a sense of gentle transition woven into August. Not quite summer, not yet fall. It’s the month where the garden begins to look a little tired, where school supplies start appearing in the cart, and we start wondering whether we need to buy a new lunchbox (again).

But even as the signs of change appear, August teaches us to linger. To press pause just a moment longer. To lean into the messiness and magic of a month that invites both reflection and rest.

Letting the Days Be What They Are

Not every day in August is picturesque. Some are brutally hot. Some are filled with cranky kids, burnt toast, and laundry that won’t dry on the line because the humidity is 3000%. But in between all that are the days that sparkle—a sunset that stops you in your tracks, a quiet afternoon nap, a roadside stand selling melons so ripe you can smell them before you park.

That’s life lately. Uneventful in the best way. Soft around the edges. Heavy with heat and light and moments I don’t want to rush past.

So here’s to August’s lazy days—where the calendar might be inching forward, but our spirits are still sprawled out in the hammock, just trying to soak up the last golden drops of summer.

My August has been decent. I just had a much anticipated knee surgery and am on the mend now. I am loving the cooler weather and being able to sit on the porch..just enjoying nature. I’m ready for fall.

It’s been an awful August…my mom needs some medical tests and consultations, and we both have Covid right now. Sigh!

August went by in an instant! We’ve got a July-like heat wave happening so we’re ditching town and going to my parents cabin for an extra long weekend before the kids go back to school. A little sad that summer is ending:(

August is probably my least favorite month because of the terrible heat and humidity where I live. Even gardening isn’t much fun when it’s so hot outside. Definitely counting the days until cooler weather is here to stay! I’ve already been shopping for Halloween decor and browsing for fall recipes to make.

It is always 100 degrees every day anymore. At least it’s not getting any hotter than that.
