December is always a whirlwind of activity, and this year was no different. As the holiday season swept in, it brought with it a mix of nostalgia, joy, and, of course, a few humorous moments that made this month particularly memorable. From festive gatherings to quiet evenings by the fire, December was filled with moments that made me grateful for the love and laughter of family and friends.
The holiday season kicked off with our annual tree-trimming party. We gathered together, armed with ornaments collected over the years, each with its own story. There’s the handmade glitter globe from my childhood, the glass angel that survived multiple moves, and the quirky ornaments that make no sense but always get a laugh. As we hung each decoration, we reminisced about past Christmases, and it felt wonderful to share those memories.
Of course, what’s a holiday season without some baking? I attempted my yearly tradition of making cookies for the neighbors. Let’s just say that if the holiday baking show ever needs a contestant who can turn flour into a disaster, I’m your gal! Flour was everywhere, and my kitchen looked like a snowstorm hit. But amid the chaos, there were plenty of laughs and some surprisingly delicious cookie outcomes, even if a few of them resembled abstract art more than actual cookies.
As the month progressed, we dove headfirst into holiday shopping. Let’s just say that the hustle and bustle of shopping malls can feel like navigating a war zone. Dodging crowds, deciphering lists, and attempting to find parking was an Olympic event in itself! I also took a moment to reflect on how different this season is from when I was a kid. Back then, it felt like the world slowed down for the holidays. Now, it’s like we’re in a race to see who can celebrate the fastest. But in the midst of all this chaos, I made it a point to stop and enjoy a cup of hot cocoa or two, just to stay grounded!
At Shady Pines
Now, let’s take a little detour to Shady Pines, where the antics of my dear mother (Ma) and my uncle (Uncle R) provided endless entertainment. Their shenanigans have been a highlight of my December! One particularly memorable moment was when they decided to throw their own “senior citizens’ Christmas party” for the other residents. Their idea of a party included a rousing game of bingo, which, as you can imagine, quickly turned into a competitive sport.
Uncle R took it upon himself to be the official bingo caller. However, instead of calling out numbers, he started telling wild stories about his youth, blending the two in a hilarious way. “B-3! And that reminds me of the time I tried to impress a girl by dancing on the bar and ended up knocking over the Christmas tree!” The residents loved it, and Ma was left shaking her head, half-amused and half-annoyed at Uncle R’s storytelling antics.
And then there was the time Ma decided to bake Christmas treats for everyone in the complex. After getting the recipe online (which she swears was from “the good old days”), she promptly misread the measurements. Instead of 1 cup of sugar, she used 1 pound. The resulting cookies were so sweet that the residents claimed they could feel their teeth rotting just by looking at them! Uncle R was not deterred; he declared them “a masterpiece” and promptly delivered them to the neighbors, who politely accepted them but were also seen later frantically checking their blood sugar levels.
But the highlight of their month was undoubtedly the Christmas light contest at Shady Pines. Ma and Uncle R decided to join forces and decorate their porch with every tacky decoration they could find, which included a life-sized inflatable Santa, an army of plastic reindeer, and enough twinkling lights to rival a Las Vegas casino. They went all out, competing fiercely against their neighbors. In the end, they didn’t win the contest, but they did bring smiles to everyone’s faces—and that’s what the season is all about, right?
As we wrap up this month, I find myself reflecting on all the little moments that make the holiday season special. December may be a busy time, but it’s also a time for laughter, love, and connection. Between my family’s holiday traditions and the delightful antics at Shady Pines, it’s been a month filled with warmth and joy. I hope your December was just as wonderful, filled with laughter and cherished moments with those you love. Cheers to the new year ahead and the memories yet to be made!

My month had ups and downs. I loved decorating and celebrating Christmas with my family. Unfortunately, I was told just a couple of days ago that my old car is beyond repair and now I have to try and get a new one somehow.

Happy New Year Rita!
I had a good month and feel so blessed. Yesterday was a little crazy because my 5yr old got bit by a fire ant and her ankle swelled up to 3 times its size! We were at urgent care for 4 hrs waiting to be seen. She was so good and colored and talked everyone. We got her medicine late, but did get it and the swelling is a little better today. Just so grateful she is ok. And was so impressed by all the staff that worked so hard to get everyone seen.
